Storyline Animations

A little disappointed to see the limited animation options in Storyline. I miss motion paths and the wipe animation in particular. Has anybody come up with a creative solution for simulating a motion path animation in Storyline?
I'm trying to create a scene where a projector screen drops down from the ceiling. I would typically do this with motion paths or a wipe animation but I'm stuck in Storyline. Any ideas?

Yes...
Create it in PowerPoint, then save as a .wmv, and bring the animation video into Storyline.
They are (I believe...) working on some animationly funkiness, but for now that's the way to do it.
The joins are seamless.

Good work around! Thanks.
Have a look here, (and then regret it...)
The first scene, upto "Markers" was created entirely like this, and then it segues immediately into pure "Storylion" functionality - you cannot see the joins.

I, too, hope to see some added functionality in Storyline's animations soon. At the very least, basic motion paths.
......
Stephanie Harnett has done two nice Screenrs on the .wmv method Bruce mentioned:

It's a work around, but by no means is it a good one. In fact I'd call it a terrible one. .wmv files do not allow for transparency, I guess if you are creating boring solid colored courses this qualifies as a brilliant work around.
Still surprised Articulate "borrowed" so much from the powerpoint interface yet only brought in 5 animations?
...well in that case I apologise to everyone for my "boring" courses!
It is the workaround that we currently have. The product is already having extra features built for it - we have a wonderful v1.0 product to work with - just think what it is going to be like at v2 or v3.
I guess it is hard to build something that tries to take people away from Powerpoint, yet retain enough to keep people happy. I am sure Magnus, Brian, Marl and the rest of the team will continue to provide us with a great product over teh years.

For a first release, it's pretty damn good product. It's better than Authorware and Captivate (robodemo) and Camtasia's initial releases by far.
Not calling it a bad product, just surprised by the lack of animations they included.
The videos work pretty well and can be made to appear seamless with other backgrounds. Just requires planning I like the use of video for some things. Just makes things work more smoothly and provides me with choices for tools (I really like AfterEffects and Keynote's workflow).
On the flip, Articulate has indicated that they are working on some pretty magical things for animation in Storyline. So the feedback hasn't fallen on deaf ears:)
So far the .wmv option has worked for me too. Even more animation functionality will be great when it happens! -k
Is there a way to make states "autoplay"? Given that you can make as many as you want for any number of objects, you could do cell animation, if you had the time and patience.
Hey Margaret,
You could make them 'Autoplay', it would just take some time, patience, and a lot of triggers.
I'll work on learning more about triggers--I'm fairly new at this. Thanks!
There is a projector screen that drops down in Templates under Layouts. I create a new slide, choose that template, and then delete the character, or just move the screen to a different slide. It is preanimated.
The problem I can see with the WMV workaround (apart from possible file size and compression issues) is it will not show on an iPhone because you'll need to "press play" to show the video... and then I don't think you can reliably layer anything on top of it
Although as Jinny says above the fade in animation with a direction from the top works OK for lowering something in
I would love some control over the bounce and elasticity of these animations, sometimes it seems avbit odd that the objects accelerate in and slow to a halt
I'm skeptical about using a wmv to replace a Storyline-generated wipe. Won't that be a huge bandwidth hog, since it's essentially full-frame video.
Have you looked into doing this in flash and importing the SWF?
Agree John. This is not a feasible solution. I find it to be quite silly actually.
Sorry....are you talking about the Wipe (slide) Transition here, or the Wipe (object) Animation?
The Wipe transition is fully supported in SL, and I am not sure that anyone is suggesting replacing it with a video,
The Wipe animation is not (yet) supported, yet could be recorded to .wmv and imported as suggested.
I am really confused now - have I misunderstood something?
Bruce
Bruce, we're talking about the wipe animation, not transiton.
SOLUTION: I built it in Presenter and inserted the swf into Storyline.
I too am disappointed with no wipe animation. For presentations or elearning, wipe and fade are my two favourites. I actually use very few others.
Having created a graphic with a wipe animation in PPT, how do I save it to wav or swf?
Sorry but I have a consideration.
Why should I create a course in HTML5 and the add a .swf video?
What if I want the Ipad version too?
I add I agree with everybody! We need more animation (Fade frist of all), and to be 100% free from PPT
We have a fade animation
I'm really sorry, i'm use to Italian name of animation....i mean the Wipe animation, and the path that give me the opportunity to move object around the slide!
