Storyline for Software Simulatoins - Demos Please!

Jan 25, 2017

I'm a pretty strong Storyline user, but have never used it for creating software simulations.  I've been tasked to create software training for both product knowledge and some application (ie) how would you used this tool with your customer.

I've watched multiple tutorials on how to insert interactive video, so I think I've got the basics of technically what I'll need to do to create these courses.  But what I'd REALLY like to see are some DEMOS of how others have used this feature.  I'd like to get design ideas and see the try it, test it in action.  Even better, can this be a topic for a weekly e-learning challenge?!

Thanks! Laurie

Hi there! I wanted to share two more links you might find useful:

Hi Kelly,

I am have the world's worst time trying to record a software simulation.  Spent 1/2 hours on a chat with someone this morning and got nowhere.  (I think he must be new - didn't seem to have answers, kept having to check with others...) all of that to say - HELP! I have a series of FIVE software simulation modules I need to make and I thought I was going to be able to crank them out using Storyline and I'm getting no where.

Question: Have you tried doing a recording since 360 came out? Wondering if there are problem with newest version? Feels like something is NOT working.

1. I record and save in view/try it mode

2. I import slides

3. It always imports with pop up/info box at 0 seconds, mouse click at 3 seconds, and screen recording action at 4 seconds on timeline. No matter what. Every time.

4. HOWEVER - when I preview, the screen recording action starts at 0 seconds.  thus it's playing BEFORE the mouse even moves and at the same time as the popup info box.  So it looks like it's out of order.

Note: if I click play on timeline, things appear exactly at time mark in timeline.

5.  Should I not be able to drag items on timeline and decide when they appear?  (ie) I'd like for the pop up box to appear for longer, so learner has plenty of time to read and delay video action for another few seconds.  But no matter when I drag video action to in timeline, it always begins playing the minute the slide starts.

I know you're not technical support.  I mainly wanted to ask If you've tried doing this process in 360 to find out of I'm crazy or not.  Or am I completely missing something when it comes to adjusting the timing on these things.

Attached: demo slide  - if you preview, notice how screen action of entering website address starts happening before mouse even moves there.

I'm just so frustrated, my deadline is approaching, and I'm getting nowhere.

Thanks!

Laurie

Hi, Laurie.

I'm really sorry about the trouble you're having with published Screen Recordings from Storyline 360.  This is indeed a software bug in our new HTML5 output, and we're working on a fix that we hope to release in our next major update.  For context, these sorts of updates have been rolling out once or twice a month since Articulate 360 was released.

I'm not sure if your learners will be viewing content from mobile devices or not, but I also wanted to share that this bug does not appear to affect our published Flash output.  So, if you can get away without mobile support until the fix is released, you could adjust your publish settings to Flash only or Flash first/HTML5 second and see better performance.  I also know that mobile is often critical, so I totally get it if this isn't a reasonable workaround for your audience.

In reading through your chat transcript with Renato, I can see that he needed some time to reproduce the problem and verify that the behavior you're seeing was a match for the bug we have on file.  I'm sorry about that, and we'll try to do a better job of communicating expectations when we need longer stretches to really dig deep.

We'll be in touch as soon as we have a fix for this.

Justin,

Thanks for the reply. After spending the entire morning trying to figure this out on my own, I finally realized it works in Storyline 2 and not 360. I have an enormous deadline, so pretty serious setback when the answer all along was just to switch back to previous versoin.

Just for feedback - today is the second time I've chatted with Renalto via chat and I'm guessing he's pretty new. It's been a really frustrating process, given that he was giving me wrong advice and wasted a lot of time.

You guys are normally great - one of the reasons I love Articulate.

Justin,

I need some guidance on how to proceed now that I've discovered screen capture is not working in 360. This has snowballed into a disaster.

-I have the core of my module build in 360. I've spent HOURS coming up with design and building this out. All I had left to do was create and import the simulation section.
-Confirmed today that simulations won't work in 360.
-I can only record screen captures in Storyline 2. If I upgrade these to import into existing module they no longer work.
-But I can't import the slides I've already built in 360 backwards into Storyline 2.

How can I get this content into one place? Please don't tell me I have to REBUILD entire deck in Storyline 2. Please provide solution!

Hi, Laurie.

The one saving grace is that this bug doesn't affect our published Flash output--only our HTML5 output and Preview (which is also HTML5).  So, if you can get away without mobile support until the fix is released, you could temporarily adjust your publish settings to Flash only or Flash first/HTML5 second and see better performance.  I also know that mobile is often critical, so I totally understand if this isn't a reasonable workaround for your audience.

Unfortunately, there won't be an easy way to convert (or import) your Storyline 360 slides to Storyline 2.  We'll let you know as soon as we get this fixed!

Justin,

One thing that would be life changing in terms of working through this obstacle: the “Journey” template.

I built my entire module in 360 using the template called “Journey” from the content library. Can you send me the template version for this that I can import into Storyline 2? Again, I am having to rebuild the entire module in Storyline 2 because screen recording for software simulations is not working in 360. Otherwise I have to create the “Journey” slide masters from scratch … (painful!)

Thanks,
Laurie

Hi all,

Great news! Articulate 360 Update 4  was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here, including some general fixes that resolve the behavior you were experiencing here.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.
