Storyline - to be or not to be?

May 25, 2012

Hi all I currently have Articulate studio and Wondered whether it was worth the upgrade to Storyline? I am soon to be building more and more interactive videos but currently use captivate - Do you think it is worth uptaking Storyline? Who has used it so far? What are your thoughts? I do have budget for it but could spend it on other authoring tools released later this year.
many thanks !

I switched over full time to development in Storyline from Studio and Captivate.  For the few (I think..) things that Storyline can not do that Captivate can, there are so many other things in Storyline that you can do that can not be done in Captivate.  Besides the ability to actually create all the wild things I think of without having to do any coding/programming my favorite thing about Storyline is 1 project file.  I do not have to have my PPT, a Presenter file, Engage interactions and QuizMaker files.  Everything is contained in 1 nice neat little package.

Yeah, when I saw that RJ, who I remember from the older Captivate promotional videos was raving about Storyline, it was interesting to say the least.  As a user of Captivate since Adobe bought the product, I definitely have seen a flat level (or even declining) of support from Adobe for the product, with many bugs persisting version to version.  Conversely, the Articulate folks will usually answer my question (even if it's to say, sorry, it doesn't do that) within an hour.  Combine that level of support with built in screen recording, a variable system that is much easier to use than the one introduced in Captivate 5 (downright painful to use imo), and an interface that allows me to feel I have all of the best features of Powerpoint and I'm gearing up to transition my Captivate based learnings into Storyline.

In your decision, also weigh the value of the Articulate forum. More valuable than the two grand or so you pay for the tool. (I included the add'l photo package). Also consider the very valuable screenrs and posts by David Anderson and Jeanette Brooks. Does Captivate provide something of the same quality?

Ideally, I think it's best to have Studio and Storyline. Studio (because it works within PPT) has richer graphic and text features. Storyline leaves Studio in the dust, though, when it comes to interactive instructional design. If you are interested, I explore a few of my favorite Storyline features in the following presentation. Johnathan,

I have been using Storyline for a couple of weeks in my new job (they actually let me choose which one to purchase) and I have already built three eLearning modules! (Granted they are probably 30 minutes max but still, that's really Rapid e-learning development!) I JUST tried out the screen recording feature to create a mini tutorial about how to actually use the eLearning module i.e. Click the blue buttons, click Next, and click an image, etc, and it was SO incredibly easy. It allowed me record the simulation, choose which mode I wanted to display it in and if I wanted it as a separate scene or in the current scene (choosing a separate scene made it so much easier to edit and preview that section). In my humble opinion, I think Storyline is a much better ROI, especially since the price is very similar and it just seems to do so much more.

I agree with all the comments above about the value Storyline provides – if I had to choose between Storyline and Captivate I would absolutely choose Storyline.  That said, I won’t be giving up Captivate anytime soon.  I prefer it for intensive system sims (actually, even for some that are not to intensive).  We’re working on a couple of projects where we’re building the course in Storyline, but the system sims (which are only one part of the course) are done in Captivate and them brought in as swfs.  I used to do something similar with Presenter and it worked great, but it’s even better with Storyline of course!
