Storyline V Studio

Mar 26, 2014

I have been trialling Storyline and do like the product very much but not sure whether we should trial Studio as well?

We are a software development company and I am looking do create tutorials and quizzes for our software and output this to SCORM and deliver it though our LMS.

The question: Are there any distinct advantages you can think of which would make either product more advantageous then the other? i.e. I can see simulation, not sure whether I would ever go down to that detail though.

Many thanks for your advise.

Hi Paul,

Artisan E-Learning wrote the E-Learning Uncovered books and provide free webinars and practice files to help people learn the tools. Below is a link to a free recorded webinar comparing Studio, Storyline, Captivate, and Lectora. If you're only considering Studio and Storyline, simply skim through the other info to get to the Articulate products. Hopefully this will help you with your decision.

Simple take: Studio is great for getting e-learning out there quickly. It's template based. Storyline is more of a building-block tool. A helpful comparison is that Studio is like a jigsaw puzzle and Storyline is like a Lego set. If you buy a jigsaw puzzle of the Golden Gate Bridge, it'll be beautiful...but that's all it will ever be, the Golden Gate Bridge. With a Lego set, you could take the time to figure out how to change the Golden Gate Bridge set into the Eiffel Tower. It'll take time and thought, but it's possible.

So then the question is whether that's a good thing or a bad thing for you. If you want to get stuff out there and the idea of having to "figure it out" isn't appealing to you, then Studio might be the right product for you. If you like the idea of flexibility and endless possibility, then Storyline might be the right product for you.

All the best!

Although I support Storyline 100% understand that Captivate 7 is %35 less expensive outright and if you take the Adobe subscription route at ~$20/month would take nearly 6 years to equal Storyline at it's current sale price as of writing this.

These types of posts should be helpful and informative so I have no problem broadcasting similar products pricing and hope this spurs healthy competition.

Studio will harness the "power" of standard Microsoft object/text objects (super handy by the way). Storyline will give you enough features (many of them being standard Visual Studio toolbox items) to wish you had PowerPoint. But you will get charged the same price for Studio or Storyline.
