Template Settings That Are Optimal for Moodle

Nov 01, 2011

Hello,

I need a little help and direction.  In your experience or research, what would be the recommended settings when creating a SCORM 1.2 module for the use in Moodle 2+ and specifcally for the Browser Window Settings?

Browser size and presentations size are big questions.  What would happen if I ticked the 'Launch presentation in new window'?

The more I think about this, the more I am questioning myself!

Hi Dave,

We've only recently got Moodle, and in testing I feel I've tried every Moodle/Articulate combination going to get things to work as I'd like

Currently, my template settings are:

I’ve read on theseforums before that a lot of people tend to prefer to have the size ofpresentations locked to its optimal size, so image quality etc. remains asdesigned, especially when the screen resolutions of the end-user canvary. However for us, our clients and users have preferred to have the ability toresize the presentation in their browser, so that’s the setting we've gone for.

I’ve only recently selected ‘Launch presentation in a newwindow’ since the recent update to the SCORM module in Moodle. Currently, selectingin Moodle to display the SCORM in a ‘New Window’ now has a border rather thanbeing completely full screen http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=187991 (meaningour content could no longer be read clearly).

Now, as a workaround, we have ‘Launchpresentation...’ selected in Presenter template, then choose ‘Display package: CurrentWindow’ in Moodle...this places the launch page within the Current Window, andmy content appears full size in a new browser window.

(Sorry, that’s a lot of mention of windows )

Depending on future developments to the SCORM module I'm sure I will have to tweak the Presenter settings in the future, but touch wood, this is working for us at the moment...

Hello Louise,

You're a star....thanks for dipping in on this one.

I know the SCORM crew for Moodle are working on getting that padding fixed.  Dan Mardsen has mentioned a Moodle Tracker that should address the issues.  It sounded like a top priority....he said give it a week or so.  I have been waiting so I can tell our Moodle hosts to implement the fix.

I was wary about using the 'Launch pres in new window'....so you are saying that is a current work around for you at the moment?

Many thanks....

Dave

From our in-house testing it seems to be...although as we're not properly 'live' yet with our site, I'm waiting to see if this issue in the Tracker is fixed and whether that affects the settings again before I start republishing a lot of content

One other thing I've tried is to swap out the 'button.gif' file in the 'player' folder in the published content - at the moment it's an orange 'launch' button, but instead just created a text box in PowerPoint with a message such as "The content has been launched in a new window. When you have finished, click 'Exit Activity' at the top of the screen" (or something similar), save out as 'button.gif', then swap it into the published folder... that way instead of having a tempting launch button that they can't help clicking, they just read the instruction to guide them back to the course page (that's the plan anyway!)

Again, things like this I've been playing around with and testing amongst ourselves...it's been a lot of trial and error! Feel free to PM me at any time with Moodle stuff - good to know I'm not alone with it! :)
