Templates in Storyline 1

Feb 17, 2015

Hi,

We have been using Storyline for ages but only now decided to create a template.  I'm looking at my Slide Master and see 7 different templates.  If I delete 6 of them and amend the 7th one to match our standards, what will happen to old modules that might have used the old templates?  e.g. when i open old modules to amend, will they be affected by the lack of relevant template?

thank you,  Beata

Hi Beata,

Can you clarify what you mean when you say you're seeing 7 templates? If I look at the slide master for one of my projects, I see 1 slide master (it has a larger thumbnail), and 5 or 6 layouts (based on the master). You can also tell by hovering your mouse over the thumbnails (their names will include either Master or Layout).

The thing to remember is that the layouts are based on the master and inherit all its attributes. For example, if you put a background image on the master, all the layouts under it will also have that image. The layouts can differ from each other, though. For example, you might have one layout with a Previous button, one with a Next button and one with both. When you're working with your slides, you assign a layout to them.

If you look at the image, the top thumbnail (next to the 1) is my slide master, which has the green background. The other thumbnails are layouts based on that master, one with a football and another with a soccer ball, and so on.

You can have multiple masters in a single project, which is handy if you have some slides with a different background. If you import slides from another project, you'll usually find that they create a second master and associated set of layouts, but you can change them afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Simon

Good morning Simon,

Your reply is extremely helpful and very clear. Thank you.

When I open my Slide Master, I see 7 slide masters (with larger thumbnails) followed by layouts.

Here you only see 2.... But there are 7:

I only presume they got created when opening/amending other people's work....

* So, is it safe to remove those surplus slide masters and create one that will become a template for all to use?

* How can I remove the unwanted masters?

Thank you for your help.

Rgds,

Hi Beata,

You're mostly right. From what I've seen, they get created when you import or paste slides from other projects into the current one.

You can delete any layouts or masters that aren't being used.

To check if a master or layout is being used, just hover your cursor over its thumbnail. It'll give you the name and tell you how many slides use it (the count for the master is the total of all the associated layouts).

If the master/layout is in use, you'll need to find the slide that's using it and change it to another layout (Home tab, Slide option, Layout button).

Once the master is no longer being used, you can right-click the thumbnail and select "Delete Master" to delete it (make sure "Preserve Master' is unchecked). If you delete the master, all the associated layouts will disappear as well.
