Text display timing

Oct 30, 2019

Howdy All. I'm looking for best practice advice on how long text boxes should display onscreen in a video (when video controls are not available). I found something that recommended 1.5 sec for a short reply to a question, but nothing deeper than that came up in my search.  Any thoughts, sources to share?  Thank You!!

This is a tricky question. I am a slow reader when it comes to onscreen text. The background glare makes it hard for me to focus on the words. With video, you’re presenting other visual information that may distract the viewer. Font selection, font size and the amount of text will also play a factor in readability. The best bet would be to set a time that you can comfortably read and then test it with a number of your target users and then adjust the timing accordingly.
