The Workplace of the Future - a free course

Workplace of the Future

I've found another very interesting free online course created, I think, in September 2016.

The course description, copied from the creator's website, is:

"Learnnovators, a leading provider of innovative eLearning solutions, and Clark Quinn of Quinnovation, a recognized leader in learning technology strategy, have designed and developed a course on “Workplace of the Future.” The free course is now available for use.

The purpose of the undertaking was to demonstrate how a course, developed under the practical constraints of a “real-time” project, can follow best principles at every stage from design to development. Simultaneously, the goal is to point to new ideas about ways to work, bolstered by the support of the Internet Time Alliance.

The course, offered as a tribute to the late Jay Cross, is being shared free of charge with the learning community at large, along with a series of blog posts providing a detailed behind-the-scenes account of the entire journey. Cross was a leader on the path to “working smarter” and founder of the Internet Time Alliance.

The highlights of the project include the following:

  • The project is deliberately developed under a set of practical real-world constraints
  • It is offered as a tribute to the late Jay Cross
  • The topic of the course is “Workplace of the Future,” a new and important subject
  • The project bakes best principles into its design and development, some of which include:

- The course is activity-based (experiential learning), with content available as a reference to be pulled by learners if and when needed

- It models decision-making within a real-world context

- It allows learners to make mistakes, providing intrinsic feedback to show the consequences of their choices

- The course uses no audio

- It offers open navigation; that is, learners are free to explore and learn without any restriction

- It uses a comic book visual style to enhance graphic appeal

- It was beta tested with a closed user group, feedback from whom was considered and incorporated

My initial thoughts having reviewed the first two modules only:

  • The visual design is very nice but I'm not sure whether the employment of a great comic book illustrator is in line with the stated aim of creating this on a tight budget;
  • I like the idea of the "My Path" icon below the screen which indicates how close your responses are to the optimal response; and
  • I like the consequences feedback between modules.

What do you think of the 'best principles' list above? Are there others that you recommend?
