Timeline and Average time to complete a course

Dec 12, 2016

My team has been asked to develop all educational in Articulate.   The team is clinical educators who have not worked in software to create engaged learning.  Our history is providing storyboards to our Instructional Designer to create in Articulate.   We no longer has this position in our organization.   I would like to determine the amount of time required to create E-learning content in Articulate bases on the number of slides and voice over with interactions.   I am a novice in this field and need to reallocate responsibilities based on the amount of time it takes to create a course as a novice.  Is there a formula or timeline to determine the amount of time to complete a project?

Thank you,

Trish

Are you asking about the whole process (analysis, design, storyboard, and development) or just about development after storyboarding is complete? The best ratio would be what your previous instructional designer was able to do, plus an increase for the initial projects as you learn the software.

This article says the standard ratio for developing interactive content in Storyline is 2 hours of work for every 1 minute of finished work (120:1). http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2013/03/adobe-captivate-techsmith-camtasia-studio-articulate-storyline-production-times.html

Bryan Chapman's research on the overall process is a good benchmark, although I think his development ratios are too low. This puts average "level 2" elearning with 25% interaction as about 187:1 for the full process from analysis to evaluation. http://www.chapmanalliance.com/howlong/

Here are a few more resources to help you think through all the factors.
