My boss is asking me to come up with some stats for training versus reading the manual. Does anyone have some numbers that I can throw onto a slide or a good article stating the benefits of training versus reading the manual.
I haven't followed up on this discussion and research since this came out but training can include a test and if this is to be believed, there is an assertion out there of 145% more info retained after taking tests: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/learning-recall.html
If you have a good-natured and solid relationship with your boss, you might try the following...
"Reading the manual is akin to me handing you a book on the subject of training effectiveness. Training is me going out and doing the research on the subject and presenting you the exact facts you need, and only the facts you need, in a clear manner so you can make a decision. Which one works better for you? It will be the same with our learners."
