Trigger a variable using Storyline's built-in player menu

Jul 03, 2013

I have searched and searched and can't seem to find a solution.

Does anyone know how to trigger a variable using the built-in menu on the player? For example, if a learner clicks on "Course Exam" from the left-hand built in player menu, adjust variable "QuestionCount" to a value of 1.

I have successfully controlled this from the slide itself, but I'd love to be able to control it from the menu because this course does not have a restricted learning path.

Your guidance is welcomed!

I'm not sure you can do it from the left side menu - but you could add a trigger to any slide based on when the timeline starts for the slide. (user clicks slide from menu, event is triggered when the timeline starts for the slide they clicked)

However, my question for you wold be why use the built in player at all? Using your own custom navigation does not limit you to having a linear course (restricted learning path). I just recorded a quick screenr of a course I am working on to show you what I mean. Sorry for the poor audio quality, but I recorded this from a busy cafeteria.

Thanks Owen!

I've attempted that and it would work normally but I'm using random questions from a question bank. When adding the trigger to the slide master it resets the count to 1 on all the question slides and I really only want it to reset on the first question. If I add the trigger to reset to 1 on the first question, that doesn't control for the random order of the questions. Ugh!  Any other ideas?

I'll definitely check out your screencast for building custom navigation. I haven't spent a lot of time with customizing the player unfortunately.

One thing you might try is creating one question outside of the question bank and placing it just before the question bank in your story. You would add your trigger to this slide. This slide would always be the first question in your quiz. It would be static but the rest of the questions would be random.

Hi Nancy - I didn't see your reply until now. What a great idea! Thank you. I'll give that a shot.
