Updating Courses After a Merger/Acquisition

Jul 14, 2016

We were recently acquired by another company, and our e-Learning modules will need to be updated soon to include the new brand name, colors, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? I'm trying to figure out the best way to do these updates--do we start from scratch? Update them slowly throughout the year? Any tips, tricks, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Becky. In my past life I worked for a regional financial institution that was acquired by a global one and we tackled this chore by starting with a content analysis for each existing course in our catalog to see where there was overlap in process and messaging between our orgs. We also identified gaps for merger-specific training that would require new courses to be created. For the existing courses,  we then ranked and sorted them, assigning update priorities and resources that aligned to their impact and visibility within the org. So courses that supported our business-as-usual operations were given higher priority, more immediate, but often less glamorous overhauls...and courses that supported less business critical functions were given a lower priority for update.

In terms of the actual update process, I recall that we developed a series of branded templates early on. From there, we went in and updated the colors, logos, etc. to align with that re-branding effort. I recall it being less tedious than I just made it sound, and gave us a chance to make some content-specific updates along the way.

Hope this has been helpful. Given the state of the business world, I'm sure others will chime in with their more recent experiences and advice!

Yes, this is really helpful! Thank you! We haven't started the update yet, but I think that's a good idea to get going on the templates early on. That way, you're ready to jump right into the updates! I also like how you prioritized things, and that could also be something we get started on now before the updates.

I'll definitely come back and give a detailed account of the approach we took during our updates once we do them. But for now, this is a good starting point!
