video and slide timing

I have successfully embedded a video into my course.  The video does not consume the entire slide but rather displays/plays in a smaller window.  After doing so I added some sub-title high pints that I want to scroll on and off the screen as the video plays.  The problem is that those sub-titles run off of the slide timeline and since I don't want my viewers to be locked into the video, I've given them the video controls (e.g. pause, go back, go forward, etc.).

As you can imagine once they choose to use the controls for something the timing gets off on my subtitles.  Is there anyway to resolve this?
