Visited/Completed Variables

Jun 14, 2016

hello, I am trying to set a button on a navigation page that will reveal a VISITED state when a user simply visits a chapter, and a COMPLETED state when the entire chapter has been reviewed. I know this means setting up triggers attached to variables, and I *THINK* I have set these up correctly, but each time I test the button, it doesn't work. I have run myself ragged trying to review each tutorial about variables, and I THINK I understand how to set this up, but apparently I don't.

ps: I've attached the triggers on the page with the buttons, and the trigger that I put on the final page of the chapter the button is associated with

Hi, Brian -- Thanks for sharing your file and for specifying where the issue you are having is taking place. With this more focused query, I think it might be best to put you in touch with one of our Support Engineers for their insights on your set up, so I will go ahead and create a case for you momentarily. You will be hearing from a member of that staff via email shortly thereafter. Your continued patience is appreciated as we work to get you sorted out!

Hi, Brian,

  • Pay attention to trigger order. Nothing will get done on a slide if the first trigger jumps to another slide.
  • Set the menu slide to Resume Saved State.
  • On the last slides in scenes 2 & 3: You have triggers assigned for when someone clicks the Header -- which they won't click, except accidentally. I suggest you simply adjust the COMPLETED variable to True when the timeline starts on the last slide of the scene.

BTW, another way to control the look of the menu buttons is to adjust their state when the timeline starts based on a variable. For example, Storyline will automatically adjust a button to Visited when clicked (if it has that state). So you could have a trigger that switches it to the Completed state when the timeline starts (i.e., when someone returns to the slide) IF the Completed variable is True.
