Work Chart for presenters?

Oct 01, 2016

Dear Everyone,

I am relatively new to Storyline.  Thanks for all the help you provide through community.  Each month I have a new course with new presenters to work on .  The presenters are handing me old powerpoints which are of course not much help.  Is there a form/ worksheet/ instruction sheet  I can give the presenters so they are not wasting their or my time.  They of course don't understand  layers, triggers or what animation I can do and I am confused of how to transform this information they give me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Tamarah

Great question Tamarah, I will be interest in what suggestions people can offer.  Whilst I don't have a template, if thinking in terms of the traditional classroom I like to ask what the presenter would traditionally have done in terms of: information to be provided; any worksheets; group activities; and any resources / media that can be provided (ie for pictures, videos, etc).

I agree that if just focusing on PPT subject matter experts can tend to just focus on the first point, information, but asking about worksheets and activities can give you ideas for making more interactive elements.

I have been looking at  work templates but that really doesn't work.  The presenters are spending time making or adjusting old and  almost useless power point presentation which I rip apart.  I get them and they think (and hope) they are done.  Then I have to have meetings trying to explain I need audios, videos, images,  and production meeting trying to think of ways to make it interactive. They have no conception or thoughts of interaction.  In mean time, being new I am constantly searching new templates or thoughts of how this old information can be transformed.

I am thinking of something like:

What to present,  How do you want to present it( give them options) , Images/ video/audio needed  template.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi Tamarah,

It's a challenging task, but that's why you were hired right?   If you are playing the role of ID and Developer then it's on you to figure out how to best structure the learning.... not the SMEs.

At the heart of Instructional Design is taking the complex and breaking it down into simple, digestible (ie "learnable") nuggets. Then present those nuggets in the right sequence and in interactive ways that aid learning.   So...   Have you considered having the SMEs deliver the training to you as a learner?

That might help you wrap your arms around the content and those "aha!" moments where you piece together how things fit may help you break it down for your learners.  It's only after that you should consider interactivity.... it's the icing that makes a good cake great.

Hope that helps!

Have you thought about running a workshop with them?

Demo some good elearning examples and show them through the process. Show the before and after so one of the power points and then how you made it interactive and then have them work through a brainstorming session for how to transform a sample course.

If they know what is possible they may be more forthcoming with ideas.

Also I like Bob's idea about having the SME present to you.
