Camtasia MP4 video won't play in Articulate Presenter
Jul 13, 2012
I'm not sure if this is a Camtasia problem or an Articulate problem. Just curious if anyone else has experienced the same problem and found a solution. Camtasia allows exporting to MP4. Articulate Presenter allows MP4 or Flash to be imported to play within a presentation. However, when I import Camtasia MP4 files to Presenter the videos are displayed as lines and noise (apparent codec issue). If I convert from MP4 to FLV using Articulate Video Encoder I end up with decreased quality, and it adds time to the project. Is there a trick to exporting Camtasia and exporting directly to Presenter?

Have you tries exporting as a SWF? It should be an option under the MP4/SWF choice. I'm not sure if it contains any AS3 coding, so if you get an error with the SWF not playing, you might try to use a web object to play the video.
Thanks for the reply. I'm using Camtasia Studio 8, and there doesn't appear to be any option to export to SWF. Nothing in their help files either.
Someone on the Camtasia forum responded with this:
"I just played an mp4 movie created with CS8 in an Articulate 09 presentation's slide with no problems at all. You just need to be aware of the optimal playback for movies within Articulate (740x480????) or within the Articulate Engage Media Player (I can't remember this one)."
Feedback on this?
Sorry for the trouble, John. If you've included videos in your Articulate content and find that they do not play in your published output, please review this article. Let us know if that helps...
Thanks!

Sorry about that, John. Give this a shot: http://www.articulate.com/support/kb_article.php?product=ap9&id=u5lzv71un2p4
Thanks. It doesn't seem to apply in this case though. I've got the most-recent version of everything installed on both computers. I've re-exported, converted, and published on both systems (work and home).
John,
What are your export settings in Camtasia 8? I'm also running 8 and after doing some tests, can't replicate what you're experiencing.

Strange. Initially I did a screen recording at 1024x768, saved to the .camrec format. I later changed the editing dimensions to 720x540 after reading somewhere that would work better with Presenter. Nether one worked. For exporting I used the default settings for "MP4 only (up to 720p)."
John, would you be willing to load the .mp4 file for testing on this end? Or you could private message me a link. Then we could try to narrow down the issue.
Unfortunately I can't due to the proprietary content, but I'll try to throw something together later that's more benign. It's sounding more and more like the problem is with my configuration, so I'll be curious to see if you can get it to work. Thanks.
I just came across your posting. I don't know if you're still having this issue. I have had similar experiences with camtasia mp4 files and sometimes even flv files. I was using captivate at the time and found out that camtasia doesnt add the metadata thats needed sometimes to display video correctly. I have no idea if this is the same situation in articulate or not. What worked for me is running my video files through an application called FLVMDI which adds the metadata. This is a free download. YOu can get it at squidoo.com
