Cannot access ALL SL Templates...cannot use Storyline

Jun 28, 2012

All of a sudden I cannot access ANY Templates in SL. Problem has progressed over the morning, and now I can't use SL at all. I've already rebooted once. Here's what I do:

  1. Start a new project
  2. Start a new slide

Here's what the error message looks like. It's sitting in the spot where the templates are usually located:

COULD NOT OPEN PROJECT

The file "C"\Users\Becky\AppData\Local\Temp\Articulate\Storyline\6eUjpa1xoMD.storytemplate" is being used by another process or you do not have the proper security permission to access this resource

There are links to Retry, Continue, and more information, but nothing works

I have NOT changed anything on my computer's setup. I'm working on a local drive, I haven't installed anything new.

I went to the folder and clicked on the file to see what it would do, and an "exception during Import PowerPoint" appears. I'm inserting the screenshot here.

SL freezes and I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL

Really need help on this one. Plan to reboot again and then check back in to forum.

I have rebooted again. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem. This time I opened a story I'd created a while back. It opens fine, but when I try to add a new slide, I'm immediately brought to this screen that I described above:

Then SL freezes. I'm locked out. Please help! Work to do.

Rebecca,

I suspect that there is a "rogue" template in your Templates folder, Rebecca > Documents > My Articulate Projects > Storyline Templates

I only have "Character Display Panels" and "Top Interactions"

Did you try and download a template that was shared on the Forums?

I have logged this twice with Magnus now. I just had to delete the "rogues", and all was OK again.

Try it - you seem to have nothing to lose.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks SO much for replying. I've been sitting here anxiously waiting. I don't want to submit a case if I can fix this on my own...well, obviously with some help.

Yes, I DID try to download a template shared on the Forums. And yes, I had thought about deleting files in the Storyline Templates folder, but was reluctant to do so without some direction.

I'll go into my folder again now and take a look. My memory is that there's a lot of junk in there...and I'm not so sure those 2 default templates are there any longer. Be back in a bit.

Hip Hip Bruce, You are MY Superhero...tell me the truth, is it those glasses you're wearing? If so, PLEASE tell me where I can buy some

Here's what I need to ask you, though. Should I in the end submit a case. Here's why.

Indeed, today's rogue file (6eUjpa1xoMD.storytemplate) WAS in the Becky > Documents > My Articulate Projects > Storyline Templates folder

BUT

Deleting that one did not fix the problem. When I relaunched SL, I had the same issue.

I had several other templates in that folder that I'd previously downloaded from SL (with no issues BTW), and since I don't have time to go through and determine which is the culprit, I deleted them all. That doesn't seem like SL is "working as designed." And you mention that you've submitted a case 2X now.

I will definitely submit a case, describing my symptoms, if you think it's a good idea.

And thanks again SO much for being there. Watch for a TU tweet...sending it out soon

Hi Magnus,

I actually had several in my Becky > Documents > My Articulate Projects > Storyline Templates folder which I put in the recycle bin so let me take a look:

  • 3-DragDropCorkBoard (I think this is when I began having trouble) Date Modified 6/28/12
  • 4-NotebookTabs Date Modified 6/1/12
  • Background+1 Date Modified 6/21/12
  • McNair_QuizTemplate Date Modified 6/21/12
  • SimpleTabs Date Modified 5/14/12
  • and then that weird one...also dated 6/28/12 so wondering if something happened with the CorkBoard one...and the characters in the name are different in it than when I posted earlier:61zquFZH7eW

Hi Rebecca,

What browser are you using and what is the version of the browser?  When you click to download the template, are you choosing to Open the file or Save it?  Do you usually have an instance of Storyline already open or is Storyline closed?

Rebecca Fleisch Cordeiro

Hey Brian,

TX for checking in about this so we can all maybe tease out what the cause is. Hopefully Bruce can also shed light on his process.

Browser: Firefox 13.0.1

Storyline State: Typically is already opened

Template option: Typically I choose to open it

But I do want to add that I hadn't had any trouble until 6/28 which is the day I downloaded the corkboard template, the one that Bruce also thinks made SL "go skwonky" (and made I add that I hadn't heard the term skwonky before, but it's perfect )

So I'm wondering if it's more a template issue than a browser, application, or save vs. open issue?

Hi All,

I've been having the same problem but I narrowed my problem down to the template called 1-DesktopOverhead. I basically cut all the templates out of my folder and moved them to my desktop. I noticed I got an extra template with a weird file name but the icon looked the same as the Desktop icon. So I added them back in 1 by 1 re opening SL after each one. All worked fine until I added the Desktop one and then it didnt work. I removed it again and cleared my temp internet files and it worked again.

Hope that helps guys.

So glad I found this thread!

I currently have Storyline and Storyline 2 installed and was getting the same error, in both versions. None of the links worked and SL would freeze.

I too had recently downloaded the DragDropCorkBoard template. After reading through this I deleted the template and now both SL and SL2 are back to functioning as normal. Thank you everyone!

this happened after we updated from pre-subscription trial version of SL to actual subscription. kept using SL w/o downloading full A360 controller download. This also led to invisibility of much of the SL Content Library. Glad to have this sorted, and happy with the ticket team.  Clearly this was a simple problem solved by a simple solution.

However, on the Articulate dev side, it would be nice if SL could prompt user when not updated, or simply prompt that SL needs A360 in order to know SL needs to be updated. This would solve headaches for others in my situation.

Hi Alyssa, what I'm saying is that I originally installed SL back in the fall, on a trial. This spring, we purchased our subscription. When we purchased the subscription, I simply used the version of SL that was already on my system, and was never prompted to install A360, thus never saw that tray, thus never saw any notifications re SL updates, thus have operated thus far w/ sub-par Content Library and template issue (maybe other things too? who knows?). I'm not 100% on exactly how it happened, nor am I upset about it, I'm just notifying the UX team devoted to onboarding/migration that there is a hole somewhere that allows this kind of thing to happen, and thus process/system could be improved.

thanks
