Demo: creating interactive video with Storyline

Jun 20, 2013

Hi, everyone: I've created a screen recording of how you might go about creating interactive video in Storyline. I've attached the Storyline file if you want to see exactly what I did. You can also view the published version. Thanks to Phil Mayor who helped me think through this particular angle of attack.

(If you're not an oenophile, the two mistakes are where I rip off the foil cap and overpour the taste at the end.)

There are a lot of ways to create interactive video, and I'm currently messing around with different ways to get the timeline on the base layer to pause. Hope it helps someone. --Daniel

Welcome, Anthony. Short answer: A pause on the base layer timeline would've allowed the learner all the time in the world to read the feedback on the layers that appear. Had I the time that's what I would've done, but that would've required a slightly different approach, and there was only so many bottles of vino I had laying around.

When I get back from vacay, I'm gonna do a different version of this. Phil Mayor (who rocks harder than Keith Moon on the opening of Baba O'Reilly) deserves thanks as well. Glad to hear from you. --Daniel

Cool, thanks for this. I played with it a little to see about the pausing, and some other tweaks that might be helpful for me, personally. This could be useful for some of our future training.

Here's the published fiddled-with version.  The story file should be included below.

I expanded on your object triggers (I left them on-screen to check they were working) and added timeline pause, play popup once, and some additional feedback when there were no mistakes. For some reason that was the hardest part, but the solution turned out to be simple...

recently used a similar object trigger to force a pause in a long slide for a course, and it was very helpful.

Thanks again for getting the mental gears going.

OK...I haven't had a glass of wine yet, because I wanted to figure out a way to get the replay to work with Matthew's version. I didn't understand why if I put the seekbar on the video WOULD automatically replay, but without it, it doesn't. I'm sure one of you gurus can explain it to me. So, I turned the seekbar off and fiddled.

So, I'm a bit slow on the trigger (oot-oh, it's getting late when a pun is inserted without intention), and was trying all kinds of things with states and variables, and then I tried simply adding a slide trigger that says to play Daniel's video when the timeline starts on the base layer - and I think that did it.

I've replayed it a couple times (my husband is waiting supper on me - or maybe not by now - don't blame him) and everything seems to be working.

I"m attaching it. There are 2 slides: 1.1 is the original of Matthew's and 1.2 is the one with my change. Let me know if this work and if not what I missed, OK?

Hi Becky, Daniel, and Matthew...

Thanks for your work on the video interactive...  I can see this coming i real handy for some forms of training in the soft skills area:  mistakes made in job interviewing, inappropriate interactions with customers, etc.

I wonder if it could be branched:  three videos, the first the setup, the second further down the timeline the result of choice A, and the third towards the end the result of Choice B.

Interesting possibilities here...

Hi All,

I'm hoping y'all can help me out here. I was very excited about this interactive video, because I saw it's potential for a project I'm currently working on. I set it up and got everything working properly except for my "no problem" layer - which is = Matthew's all good layer.

Matthew, you mentioned that this was your most troublesome aspect: "...and some additional feedback when there were no mistakes. For some reason that was the hardest part, but the solution turned out to be simple.."

Because the content is proprietary, I replaced the video with that sample wildlife video from Microsoft (sorry), but I left all the layers and triggers "as is", aside from moving them on the timeline to "work" with this shorter video.

The problem: the NP layer/feedback doesn't show repeatedly when I click the Problem button. It plays:

the first time I click at the beginning of the video

the first time I click AFTER the first problem layer has been displayed (WE)

the first time I click AFTER the second problem layer has been displayed (clinic)

So it seems as though it's being reset the other layers playing, but that's not how it's supposed to work. It's supposed to work EXCEPT for when the layers for those triggers are in an active state.

I've checked all the triggers at least a gazillion times.. I've also clicked the gear icon for properties on each layer at least that many times and I'm not seeing any differences between mine and Matthew's.

Clearly there is a difference because mine isn't working right.

Daniel, Matthew, Phil, can any of you see what's wrong here? Michael?

You'll see what I mean if you keep clicking the problem button...

Matthew Kliewer

Hi Becky,

I think maybe I found the issue - the "no problem" slide layer had a very long duration, but the text object didn't extend all the way.

I shortened the whole duration of the slide layer to a few seconds, and made the text object "show until end". It seems to work OK, if I understood the issue correctly. It fades in for a few seconds after click, then fades out. It repeats if you click it again.

10-day expiration preview...

Hope that helps!

Matt, thank you so very very much! I kept looking at the text box thinking it's length must be the problem. I saw that it was short and didn't even notice the timeline length. Of course my eyes were bleary at that point. Tx so much for the extra pair of eyes.

I just went into the "real" story, dragged the timeline down to the text box, and I'm good to go.

I am thrilled. I really like this way of engaging the learner especially when there are case scenarios involved. So a big thanks to Phil who helped Daniel, to Daniel for the inspiration, and a huge thanks to you for taking the time to figure out my problem.

Kudos to you also for the feedback-to-the-Learner-when-there-isn't-a-problem idea. That was the first thing that I thought would make a great addition as I looked at Daniel's initial iteration.

I'm now going to have a great W/E! And can relax over a glass of wine tonight. Hip hip!

Sorry, Matthew and Rebecca, I was on vacation, and missed some of this discussion. Thanks for all the help, and Rebecca, I too was struggling with how to get it to replay. I guess you just keep fiddling till something works.

I made a view graphic design tweaks. Here is the published version of the interactive wine video. Storyline files are attached.

For anyone new to the discussion, there are two mistakes: one where I rip off the cap and another when I overpour the glass at the end. I made a few graphic design tweaks. Thanks to everyone. --Daniel

Great stuff, enjoyed it, am doing something similar myself. I'm having a problem and can I ask a question that I don't think is quite covered in the above responses?

When I preview the slide, I can click anywhere on the playing video and it will pause. But that doesn't stop the slide's timeline: the triggers still kick to active and the 'mistake' click still works, and shows the prompt, at the 'wrong' place in the video. I don't like to mess up a nice piece of work (!) but if I try hard enough I can. Any way to disable that?

I'm assuming that SL does not have any way to sync the slide timeline to the video's playhead position? I am experimenting with the seekbar, the video controls (or not displaying them) to make the best compromise. I know I can pause the media, or pause the timeline with a trigger, but that doesn't help.
