Animation in Storyline through the Morph Transition
Some time ago, PowerPoint came out with a transition called Morph that literally morphs shapes, colors, strokes, graphics, etc. from one slide to the next. In other words, if you build a design on one slide, duplicate the slide, and make changes to the shapes on the second slide, the Morph transition will smoothly deform the shapes from the first slide to the next.
This transition is POWERFUL for animation. I feel that small animations of this kind are especially important for a product like Storyline. In a sense, the ability to build animations is one of the key features that I feel is missing from Storyline. If Articulate would consider adding the Morph transition to Storyline, it would allow users to animate the graphics on the screen with triggers, and I believe that would open up new worlds of possibility with Storyline.
Is this something you all would consider adding to Storyline?
Hello everyone, 🎉
I have some great news to share! We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 98, we’ve included essential fixes and new features. One of the new features we’ve included is:
- Engage learners with fluid transitions that seamlessly animate objects, shapes, and other content between slides.
Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You’ll find our step-by-step instructions here.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have additional questions.

As an enthusiast GSAP user, i dislike the lack of easing and better controls in Storyline animation. Considering that ALL Storyline animations including the new 'Emphasize' things are basically controlled by GSAP internally, i really do not understand why Articulate doesnot give the power of GSAP to its users. As its there under the hood.

I think your response is still there. Microsoft have the luxury that their presentations work within their powerpoint so they control the authoring and the player. Storyline has to publish content that works in browsers and does use an industry standard animation library to accomplish this. Animations have improved a lot and the roadmap does show more on the way.

Hey there, Phil. When SL first came out, I was surprised to see that the interface was practically a clone of the PP interface. My SWAG is that they reached some agreement with MS to use that. But using all of MS's animations might create a copyright problem for Articulate. Just a guess. Hope all is well.

Hi Russ I hope you are well. I cannot answer that, that is something for the Articulate team. I know there is a lot more to come with animations, the roadmap even shows physics in animations

I am beginning to wonder if Articulate has some new big thing they are working on that is taking all their attention given how they are neglecting their existing products & ignoring their users' feedback. There are very basic features that have been requested for nearly a decade - features that all of their competitors provide - but the devs are just not paying attention.
I know I am having a hard time justifying to my boss that we should renew our licenses next year since we can get more of the things we want using MS PowerPoint and the Techsmith tools

Why a morph animation isn't included is a good question. My guess is, unless there is some model that could be dropped in, programming a morph procedure would be fairly difficult.
Look at the "spin" animation. It only lets you spin 90°, 180°, or 360°. I can't imagine why they didn't add a 10° increment. It would be exceeding easy to add. Forcing spins into right angle turns is stone age. I can do it with JavaScript, but it is kind of a nuisance and creates problems if someone drags the scrub bar. - Seb-DaubertCommunity Member
Considering how storyline has been thought out and developed, there is little chance that it will be possible, it would require a complete rewrite of the source code of the application, I sincerely think that this is not possible...:/

Yes, you might be able to do it in PowerPoint, IF you have the right version. But, that means maintaining content outside of the storyline file. SL already mimics PowerPoint, and the ask is, why morph is not able to be added.

Not sure how "maintaining content" is an issue. My company produces video for importation into SL all day, every day. Each project is a separate directory, and all the media (mages, sound files, and videos) are stored in that project directory.

Let me start by saying I haven't looked at this, and certainly haven't tried it. But doesn't PP have an export to .MP4 option? If so, can you create a video then use that inside your SL slide?
I'm guessing that any export to MP4 output may be low quality, but perhaps worth a try.- PhilMayorSuper Hero
If this is ever going to be possible then Storyline needs to have all the animations PPT has at its disposal. Which makes me suspect this is not close. Even then this will only work in a linear course. And will break when you jump around the menu. It is very useful in PPT and I can definitely see places it would help in Storyline. I would however, prefer to see more granular control on animations natively in storyline.

This is actually what I end up doing all the time. It would just be nice to do it right in SL, or even just to know why we can't do it in SL.

I'm guessing there has been no movement on this in the 5 years since this post was created? I have seen some truly wonderful suggestions put forth that have been virtually ignored by the Articulate development teams. Some of the requests are not even new ideas - just suggestions that Articulate implement the core items that eLearning creators need and are able to reliably get from other creation tools. (I'm looking at the suggestion for course version control which is a foundational feature that virtually all other authoring software has).
Come on, Articulate team! You ask for our suggestions - how about you DO something with them!
