Crossword Puzzle: Making Navigation Easier

Hi E-Learning Heroes community!

The e-learning team I am working with has recently been using crossword puzzles as a way for quiz interactivity.

A few internal clients have commented that they love the interaction, however, it is hard to navigate. Right now, the user can click on the box to add the letter and then tab to add the next letter. However, if the crossword is a vertical word, the tab function doesn't always go sequentially from one box to the next in the word.

I've attached the storyline file. If any crossword puzzle gurus can take a look and see how the navigation and the ease of going from one box to the next to add a letter can be simplified that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Best,

Nia

    Hi Nedim,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I didn't even think about changing the custom order. Let me try that to see if it works and I'll be in touch if I need further existence and have questions about the javascript if we choose to go that way. Thank you for sending that example. It was awesome!

    Have a wonderful day,

    Nia

    Hello Nia,

Maybe you should try to create a custom focus order in Storyline for TextEntry fields. Then you should be able to go sequentially from one box to the next in the word in order you choose. When you reach the last letter in the first word, you move to the first letter of the next word, and so on. Another option is to use javascript to be able to move to the next box as you type as in my example below:

      Hi Nedim,

I am having the same problem with focus / navigation in a cross word.  I see this was posted a year ago but I was wondering if you can provide me with the Java code.  I can only see the html file in Review.

        Hi Ursula,

I’ve been quite busy lately, but I took some time to find and edit the original script and .story file initially posted by Nia. This was just a suggestion and a bit of an experiment. Please find the attached .story file, which includes both the JavaScript code and the focus order settings.

    Hi Lauren!

Thank you for sending me the forum link for Building Better Courses. I will post the question there now!  Thanks!

  • Hello Nia!

We have so many instructional designers in this community who I know can help out with your build! Most of them work in our Building Better Courses forum, so I'd encourage you to post this question there too.
