Drag and Drop: Resetting answer choices when clicking try again

I searched high and low for the answer to this question but was unable to find anything. After playing around with some triggers for a while, I finally figured it out, so I wanted to share for anyone who is stuck and searching for an answer.

For some background, I created a drag and drop item with 8 answer choices and two drop areas. I allowed the user 2 attempts, so the try again feedback generated automatically. I attempted resetting to initial state both on the base  layer and the try again layer - didn't work.

Changing the try again trigger to jump to drag and drop slide rather than hide layer would have worked with reset to initial state, but my drag and drop base layer showed a directions layer when timeline started on that slide. So, my "jump to slide" replayed directions and audio over again, which I didn't want.

If your drag and drop is set up similarly, this is how you fix it so that 1. the answer choices reset to their original places and 2. any layer set to show when timeline begins does not show again.

On the Try Again layer, you need two triggers for the try again button:

Hide layer this layer when the user clicks try again (or whatever your button is called)

Jump to end of timeline on drag and drop when the user clicks try again (or whatever your button is called)

Picture attached.

  • Hey KelseyCook Thank you so much for taking the time to share your solution for this. This saved so much time for me.  Your solution worked perfectly for my eLearning module.

  • Great tip!

Just came across this development situation and your solution worked perfectly.

    Thank You!

  • Thank you for posting.  I had a slide that was stuck in an endless loop of "try again", even though I limited the attempts to 2.  This worked.

I'm assuming this would only work if you have your drop objects all shown at once? I have my drop objects to show one at a time, and when I attempted this, it only moved the very first drop target to the beginning location.

      Hello Vanessa,

I'm sorry for the trouble regarding the drag-and-drop interaction. Unfortunately, what you're experiencing, where the drag items are not returning to their starting point after clicking the "Try again" button, is a known bug. Our product team is already aware of the issue, and we'll let you know when a fix is available.

Kelsey's workaround works for their use case. But if your drag items are set to show one at a time, it may not be applicable, as you have confirmed. I recommend the following workaround in this case:

      1. Change the slide property of the drag-and-drop base layer from 'When revisiting' to 'Reset to initial state.'
      2. Create a trigger in the Try Again layer to "Jump to slide - This slide."

I have prepared the attached sample Storyline course to illustrate this workaround. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have additional questions.

  • Hi Kelsey, thank you so much. I have watched tutorial after tutorial and nothing worked. You set up your drag and drop the same way I do. I followed your instructions and, just like magic, it worked. To help others, I included a screen shot of the actual trigger details. Thank you again :-)
