Exporting Rise360 projects to ZIP

Hi all,

We have been successfully using Articulate's Rise360 to create e-modules for external partner organisations. The procedure has been that e-modules were shared with these third parties as Scorm export files, and imported in Moodle LMS systems.

Unfortunately, we will soon close down, therefore we are ending our Articulate subscription and our e-module development services.

For now, the third parties will continue to use the SCORM exports, but in future, information may have to be updated so they may wish to edit the content which is not possible in the SCORM exports.

Is there a way that in the future, say a year from now, that the partner organizations buy their own Articulate subscription and get back to the original Articulate Rise360 "source code" files to edit the content by importing them into Rise360?

If so, what is needed and how should we share the current files for them so they can work on them at a later stage?

We've conducted some research before posting, we have found the following:

  • Yes, we have read the guide 'What to do before cancelling' , and it's not covered there https://access.articulate.com/support/article/Here-s-What-to-Do-Before-Cancelling-Your-Articulate-360-Subscription
  • No, we do not aiming that partner organizations to be able to edit Rise360 content without license / seat; they have to buy their own seat if they want to edit
  • Yes, we know about the 6 months 'cool down period', i.e. that the link / account is still available 6 months post-closure; we are thinking more what if a year post-closure that the partner orgs want to edit, what can they do?
  • Yes, encrypted non-editable ZIP file is just fine --the partner orgs will need to import it back in order to make edits
  • No, we are not talking about the raw files e.g. Word docs and loose images; we would like to transfer the editable Rise360 projects
  • Yes, we know about the 30 days trial; the possible scenario is to transfer the projects to an intermediate account to act as a 'proxy', but what happens after 30 days?

Many thanks in advance for any feedbacks and inputs.

    TL;DR: Not possible.

After a very long back-and-forth email with support, they confirmed it that it would not be possible to do such thing as export-import. It is what I have feared --which possibly by design-- and also mentioned long and wide in the replies.

Thank you all, it's just no go.

  • We are completing a tool at the end of this month that will allow users to edit their SCORM packages, from many tools not just Articulate, after they have been exported and without needing the "source code" of the original application. Our premise is that we can continue to make SCORM reusable, accessible, interoperable, and durable as it was intended to be when it was first established over 25 years ago. If you are interested in learning more and being part of this community project let me know.

Hi Brian, I would love to learn more about this. I have sent you a message on LinkedIn.

  • No, they cannot import the exported zip file back into Rise to make edits. Due to Rise's cloud-based nature, they'd need a subscription first, and then you would have to send them a copy using the "send a copy" feature. Otherwise, they will have to rebuild the courses.

  • The  terms of service are clear that after six months it is irretrievable.

AS the content is on your account its would need to be transferred to another account for your partner to access it.

  • There is no way to "export" an editable version of Rise. That's, to me, is the main drawback of Rise. To maintain the ability to edit a Rise course, one must maintain an Articulate license.

Here's a screenshot from the most relevant section of the Terms of Service (https://www.articulate.com/360-terms-of-service/ ):

Articulate retains Rise courses for 6 months after you end your license. That means the courses would be available again if you renew your license within that time. However, as soon as you terminate your Articulate license, you lose access to Rise. In other words, you lose the ability to send copies.

For your partner organizations to have editable versions, they need to buy an Articulate license before yours ends, so you can send them copies of the Rise courses you developed. And they need to maintain that Articulate license. (If you send the course to a person with a trial version, the course will only be retained for 6 months after the trial ends.)

The other option would be to find another organization or company with an Articulate license that is willing to accept ownership of the courses.

If neither of those options is feasible, then your partner organization (or someone else they work with) will have to recreate the course when it needs to be edited. That process will be easier if they have a Word document with all the text, plus all of the photos, graphics, and other media files.

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for your comment, but support unfortunately has not been very helpful, their replies (-ies, plural) sounded like automated canned response and keep circling around with replies, everything except clear yes or no (= can or cannot) to the 'zip file' track.

Ah yes, we have indeed thought of another (active) supplier as an intermediate, but alas it is not available.

  • I think you would need to contact support. As I read it that the content is removed after 6 months.

The other solution is to transfer the files to another supplier.
