Grade recording in D2L

Hi, I have a Storyline 360 course that consists of four scenes. Each scene is a series of slides with texts, then a multiple choice question. The multiple choice questions are not set up as question slides. Instead I have triggers set for a choice to go to an Incorrect slide with feedback (then a button to return to the question) or to a Correct slide with feedback. The Correct slide shows the Next button but the slides with the incorrect answer do not.

At the end of the last scene, I have a final slide that has an Exit button that triggers course completion. The course completion trigger status is set to Completed/Passed. The publish setting in Storyline is set to Passed/Failed. I publish the course as SCORM 2.1 to communicate to our LMS (D2L).

The question format in D2L is set as a Pass/Fail in the gradebook. In testing, nothing appears in the D2L gradebook after I exit the course. I want Pass or Fail to show but it's not working. I suspect there is something simple I am doing wrong but I just can't figure it out. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

  • Hello Saceti,

    Thanks for sharing those details.

Based on your description, this sounds more like a reporting configuration issue than a D2L grading issue. One thing to keep in mind is that your multiple-choice interactions aren't set up as Storyline question slides, and you didn't mention using a Results slide. When publishing for LMS with a Passed/Failed reporting option, Storyline typically needs a tracked completion or quiz result to report status to the LMS.

A few questions that may help narrow this down:

    • Can you confirm whether you're publishing for SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004? Storyline doesn't publish to SCORM 2.1, so I want to make sure we're looking at the correct standard.
    • In the LMS Reporting and Tracking options, what is the course being tracked by (for example, a quiz result, number of slides viewed, or another completion method)?
    • Are you using a Results slide anywhere in the course?
    • If you test the published output in SCORM Cloud, do you see a completion and/or success status being reported?

Testing the course in SCORM Cloud can help determine whether Storyline is sending the expected completion and success data before investigating any LMS-specific settings.

Hi, Eric, thanks so much for your help!

In Storyline I see that publishing to SCORM 1.2 is available as an option. Does that mean it's there but I shouldn't use it?

I would really like to just have completion be the number of slides viewed - in some earlier attempt that didn't work. I'm not sure why and I haven't gone back to trying that again. In my last version of the course, I've completely removed any quiz questions and do not have a results page.

As I noted, I have the settings as reporting to an LMS as a SCORM 1.2 object, and the LMS Reporting setting as Passed/Failed for "Report status to LMS as:".  Under the tracking tab, I have "using triggers" checked for the tracking options.

I just tested the course in SCORM Cloud and it marked "complete" under Completion and passed under Status.

What would you suggest for my next steps?

        Hi Saceti,

Thanks for testing the course in SCORM Cloud and sharing the results. That's very helpful context.

To answer your first question, SCORM 1.2 is absolutely a valid publishing option and is widely supported by LMS platforms, including D2L. Since your package is reporting both Completed and Passed correctly in SCORM Cloud, there's no indication from what you've shared that SCORM 1.2 is the source of the issue.

Regarding tracking by slides viewed, that's also a valid approach if completion based on course progress better matches your design. However, because your current package is already reporting completion and success successfully in SCORM Cloud using trigger-based tracking, I'd focus first on how D2L is interpreting those reported values before changing the tracking method.

Since SCORM Cloud is receiving both a Completed status and a Passed status from your course, Storyline appears to be reporting the expected data successfully. That's a good sign and helps narrow down where the issue may be occurring.

At this point, it may be helpful to review the D2L configuration with your LMS administrator, particularly how the SCORM package is associated with the gradebook and how completion/success data is being interpreted for that course. Since the package is reporting correctly in SCORM Cloud, the next step is often to verify the LMS-specific settings that control gradebook updates and pass/fail reporting.

It sounds like you've already done some great troubleshooting, and the SCORM Cloud results give us a solid starting point for investigating the D2L side.
