Hover States, Layers and Images
I wanted to create a visible background layer and then in a second layer add transparent objects such that, when the user hovered over them, a text block would show. However, when I preview the slide, the hover effect doesn't work. Does hover only work on images or vectors, and not created objects?

The slide is number 15. I have a visible background layer (graphic of a fab shop with lots of hazards). To test to see if this will work, I created another layer and also created a transparent box over the wrench at the top of the ladder on the left side of the graphic. I created a hover state for the transparent box that shows a text box when the mouse hovers over the box, then the text box leaves after the mouse moves - at least that is what it is SUPPOSED to do. When I preview, I get no hover effect.
Hi Perkinli,
Thanks for sharing your file! I was able to get this hover state to work on my end. Here's what I modified:
1. I adjusted two triggers on this slide.
- I first inserted a new trigger to show the Untitled Layer 1 when the timeline starts on this slide.
- The second trigger I modified was for navigation. I changed the Jump to slide trigger from when Timeline ends to User clicks or swipes next. This allows the learner to take their time viewing all the hazards in the image before proceeding.
2. I made sure that the Slide layer was marked visible in the Slide Layer Panel.
- I noticed that when I marked this visible with the eye icon, the AI audio you've included in the slide layer is visible when viewing the base layer.
3. I checked the hover state for the rectangle you included in the slide layer.
- The text box seemed to be slightly out of the slide frame, so I made sure it was in view.
I'd like to walk you through a visual of these updates. I'll attach an updated version of the course so you can see the changes in the .story file.
If you are looking for something different or have any further questions, please let me know! I'm happy to help!
Hello Perkinli,
Thanks for reaching out! I tested this on my end and was able to include hover states with text boxes successfully.
I can confirm that the hover state is a built-in feature that can be applied to various objects, including pictures, shapes, and buttons. When learners move their mouse over these objects, the hover state should automatically display without a trigger.
- You mentioned you included created objects in your layer. Could you share more about these specific objects you've made?
- Are you experiencing this behavior with more than one course or just this one?
- It's best to be working on the latest version of Storyline 360 (Update 98).
I'd be happy to take a closer look at your setup. You can share your .story file with us in this thread or privately in a support case.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
