Is there a maximum amount of scenes and variables in one storyline file?

Hi all,

I'm working on a client project and they'd like one storyline file as the deliverable. Within this file will be 40 modules (40 scenes) of about 7-10 slides each. Most modules/scenes will have variables and some scenes will include video (although not many).

Before going too far down this road, I'm hoping I can get some information on limits to the number of scenes or variables in one storyline file (if any) and any other possible issues that might arise with a large file size.

Thanks!

Jessica

  • Phil Mayor had a slide with over 700 variables once.  I’m sure there is a limit, but I’m equally certain that you will far exceed good pedagogical principles long before you reach it. For example, 40 modules in one file. Just my opinion, but I don’t think even Job would have that much patience.

  • The limitation maybe the LMS with resume data. If you have a lot of videos in this authoring will slow to a crawl. Perhaps split them up

We need to build a 90 min course that breaks into 52 different learning paths. The learner would enter and select their assigned path and move through 90 min of basic training with scenarios and knowledge checks.

Can something this complicated be built in a single storyline course?

        Hi elviraharyadi,

        Thanks for reaching out!

I don't see a response to Dee's post, but if you're comfortable sharing details about what you're trying to achieve, we'd be happy to provide some insight. You may also want to check out our new Exchange Best Practices forum, that's located under the Connect tab. I hope this helps!

  • There will be limits, however, it is based more on the type of slides and complexity rather than a hard fast rule.

I hit the limit on layers once at 450+ but suspect with less complex layers I could have had more.

The question I would ask is why does it need to be in one course, it is likely to be a better user experience if you split into sections.

I am quite new with SCORM package. Would it be possible to upload multiple SCORM packages to an LMS as learning materials? And how the tracking works in this situation.

It will be dependent on the LMS, but most will allow you to upload different packages and sequence them
