Sharing and seeking: ideas for making videos more interactive
I’m working on a course that uses almost all video. The content’s good, but the client is asking for ideas for making it more interactive.
Someone sent me the 21 Jump Street movie site as an example. I know, right? I like how the trailer layered movie trivia questions over the video. I thought this would make a good example so I tried building it in SL.
This is what I put together: Elearning Quiz Demo
I’d also be interested in what you think the right number of questions per video might be. Most videos will be 1-2 minutes.
Thank you!

Hola Gonzalo,
Thank you for your feedback. What is it you are trying to do with quizzes on slide layers? Do you have something specific in mind? It is possible inserting quizzes with variables and custom buttons. Maybe someone on the board can help. - GonzaloRosettiCommunity Member
Nothing specific; I just wanted to add graded questions with the ease of doing so in slides!

NYTimes just published a really great example of interactive video:
What Romney and Obama’s Body Language Says to Voters
While the hand tracking isn't something most of us can do, the illustrated gesture navigation sure is a creative way to jump to specific clips in the video.
Interesting discussion.David, I love this example! How would you go about creating that kind of navigation which allows the user to jump to a specific location inside the same video?
One way is to create several clips and set a trigger to each one, but if we want to create the illusion that they are all merely parts of the same long video we would have to somehow "bind" them all under one seekbar...
Any thoughts?
Hi Tali -
Here's a quick example for you. Using a single, source video, I created five instances and placed each on its own layer. Then, using Storyline's video editor, I trimmed each video to play a specific section of the video.
This gives users the option to view either the entire video or selected chapters of the video.
Note: this isn't the same thing as jumping to specific frames in the video... I'm faking it by creating the instances of the video. But it works just as well

Absolutely love this technique, thanks Montse!
One question for the community however. When trying to reproduce this effect, I'm having issues with the video not resuming where it left off when the layers are closed.
Once the layer is hidden and it returns to the main slide, the video starts over. I have adjusted the "Revisits" options on both layer and main slide in various combinations, and that doesn't seem to have an affect.
Anyone else had this issue, or know of a solution?

not sure what caused the problem I encountered above, but I ended up deleting and re creating my slide. Now working as intended.
I left everything on default settings, but on my layer, I made sure to select the "pause timeline on base layer" option.
Works like a charm and looking great!
