Sharing and seeking: ideas for making videos more interactive
I’m working on a course that uses almost all video. The content’s good, but the client is asking for ideas for making it more interactive.
Someone sent me the 21 Jump Street movie site as an example. I know, right? I like how the trailer layered movie trivia questions over the video. I thought this would make a good example so I tried building it in SL.
This is what I put together: Elearning Quiz Demo
I’d also be interested in what you think the right number of questions per video might be. Most videos will be 1-2 minutes.
Thank you!

Montse,
This is fa-bu-lous!
We might have a video-focused project coming up soon, and I love your concept!
The learners will take it on desktop computers, so we won't have the mobile Safari = Play icon issues that Sasha mentioned.
Thank you!

Hi, Allan: I forgot to delete the second blank "web object" slide. Sorry about that.
Articulate has put together a very informative blog post and Screenr on inserting and manipulating the behavior of youtube/website videos: http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/how-to-add-a-youtube-video-to-storyline
Two basic ways to insert website vid, and each has certain strengths and weakness which the post above and Screenr make clear. I think it'll answer most of your questions. Let me know how it goes. --Daniel
Hi DanielSorry for delay in responding to your post I have been offline on a family vacation and just got back. Maybe I need to do more testing but the first time I tried to embedd a web object with a Youttube video on it and have layers on top for the interactions i.e. buttons and questions when chosen it wouldnt load the video. I have to have it as a web object so the module will work on an iPad .... right????
Any help would be appreciated. I really want this to work

Hi everyone
Montse's demo is excellent and has given me a lot of ideas for use in Higher Education Courses. Has anyone ever tried to add similar interactivity i.e. buttons and pop up questions and feedback over the top of a Youtube embedded movie. I have read the articulate support page that Daniel mentioned (http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/how-to-add-a-youtube-video-to-storyline) and it would have to be by embedding a web object as the embedded movies would have to run in the Storyline modules on an iPad using the free Articulate player app.
I am very keen to get this to work .... am I missing something? Has anybody ever done it please? If it won't work over the top of the web object would they work if for example, the video only ran on 25% (top LH corner for example) of the view window and the buttons and questions popping up to the side? I hope I am making sense to those reading this post?
I hope there is a way to do this .... as streaming media is the only practical way to deliver the quantity of video I have in mind.

Hi Allan,
Check out this screenr on inserting videos. The second half is on using them as web objects. Unless something has changed, only inserted video files can have elements added on top.

Hi Tali -
Here's a quick example for you. Using a single, source video, I created five instances and placed each on its own layer. Then, using Storyline's video editor, I trimmed each video to play a specific section of the video.
This gives users the option to view either the entire video or selected chapters of the video.
Note: this isn't the same thing as jumping to specific frames in the video... I'm faking it by creating the instances of the video. But it works just as well

I am not sure if this is discussed. I got some problems when I moved the timeline back and forward. I found out (Montse already did, but I just noticed this after studying her template): you must disable the video control:
and enable the seekbar for that slide (with the gear option):
Else, the videocontrol will not interfere with the timeline. For example: When your question pop-s up after 30 seconds, this question will not pop up after 30 seconds if you move the videocontrol forward. Using the seekbar will work, it also controls the video.
Cost me just 2 weeks to figure out (while it is very logic), so this might worth sharing ;o)
