Starting a course with a reflection piece

Hi everyone, a lot of our eLearning courses in Rise start with a checkbox list of reflective questions for the learner to read and select each tickbox as they think it through.

A basic example off the top of my head is:

Think about how you would feel if (tick each box as your read it):

    • Someone spoke to you rudely
    • Someone was too busy to talk to you when you were upset

It's not my favourite way to start a course and engage with a learner as it doesn't seem super engaging, but sometimes my SMEs are adamant about using it. I'm at a bit of a loss of how to improve this.

Does anyone have an example they'd be happy to share with me of how they have a reflective piece/block in their content that is not just a checkbox/list?

Thanks in advance!

  • CormacCullen-3f : The steps Luciana provided tell you how to program the Continue button in Rise to ensure that the preceding content is completed.

When that content is a Storyline block, there are different ways to track completion. I think the easiest is to use a "Complete course" trigger that runs at the point when you consider the Storyline is done. In Tom's example, it looks he had a "Complete course" trigger run when the user clicked the "I'm ready" button.

You also need to publish the Storyline to Review 360 with the proper tracking (for example, track via a completion trigger).

  • I'd consider using a Storyline block where they can type in their reflection. Depending on the type of question, you could do something like this.

Course Title: How to Deal with Obnoxious Customers

Before we get started, think about a time you had to deal with a bad customer. If you could go back in time, what's one thing you'd tell your younger self?

    [add reflection in text box]

Next slide, display what they typed and show what an expert may say:

    You said, ....

It's really important to...(expert thought) when dealing with customers. That's why in this course we're going to explore these three things.

    Here's a simple mock up.

Thanks for sharing TomKuhlmann how did you make it so that the Rise 'Continue' button only becomes visible once learner click on the 'I'm ready' button?

        Hello CormacCullen-3f

Thanks for reaching out! To ensure the learner completes the content above before seeing the Continue button, you'll need to modify the Edit Continue settings within the Continue Block

        Here's how:

        1. Navigate to your Continue Button Block within your Rise course.

        2. Hover your mouse in the left-hand corner of the block and click on the pencil icon to open up the Edit Continue side panel.

        3. Under Completion Type, click the dropdown to modify this to Complete Block Directly Above or Complete All Blocks Above. That way, the learner cannot see the Continue button until the desired content is completed.

You can modify the Label Text and Hint Text that the learners will view as they work through the course, depending on your needs.

        • I'd like to share a visual of these steps in action for your reference.

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
