Updating SVGs in Storyline
Hey
I recently updated to v3.101.34880.0. Previously, I had little to no issues when replacing SVGs in an existing course. Since this update, I've been struggling to replace SVGs without Storyline freezing or displaying an error report.
An example of when this issue would occur. I have a slide with one person on it. I selected the person and chose 'Replace image'. Instead of replacing the graphic, a new graphic is added to the screen, and the error message appears. If this doesn't occur, then the program will freeze, and I have to 'force quit' the program and reopen it. I'm being forced to save every time I make a change, no matter how small, to a screen.
I tried updating graphics using the 'Media library', but they either didn't change the graphic or only changed one of them, even though there were more in the module. Additionally, when they were changed, the graphics were relocated from their current position to the top-left corner of the screen. When this happened, if there were additional states, these states no longer worked and had to be deleted and remade.
I love being able to use SVGs as they are crisper, text can be used and more.
I know this is an issue for other users, as I've spoken with some of my colleagues, and they are experiencing similar issues.
Are there any fixes I can try other than adding a new graphic each time and then reapplying all the triggers, animations, etc?
Cheers
Jen

Exact same issue here.
Hi DiarmaidCollins!
Sorry to hear you're also having trouble with SVG images in Storyline!
As I shared with jensad, some of the behavior they reported could be related to Storyline bugs we are currently tracking around SVG images. Whereas, other behavior is unexpected. Do you mind clarifying the specific issue you're running into, with SVG images?
If these issues are local to a specific Storyline course and/or SVG file(s), it would be helpful to see a copy of those items for testing on our end. Feel free to share those here in the discussion, or privately through a support case.
We'll delete them from our system as soon as we're finished troubleshooting!

I, too, have the same issue.
Hi Prasath!
Happy to help!
If you're experiencing crashes, and error messages when importing SVG files into Storyline, and you're already working with locally-stored assets, please try a repair of your Storyline installation to see if that corrects the issue.
However, if that doesn't do the trick, please share a copy of the .story file, as well as SVG files that you've been working with. We'd be glad to test them on our end, to determine if you're being affected by a known Storyline bug.
If you prefer to provide those items privately, please do so through a support case.

A new challenge has now started. Trying to drag and drop an image onto the screen gives you a black screen that you can't access. It's not there when you reload the course. Urgh!
Hi jensad!
Sorry to hear you're struggling, working with SVG images in Storyline!
Some of the behavior you shared sounds similar to two Storyline bugs we're tracking, for SVG images.
- SVGs with States will reset to x=0 y=0 position, if you replace the image with another SVG using right-click > Replace Picture.
- A Trigger linked to an SVG file becomes unassigned after replacing the said SVG file.
If you're comfortable sharing the affected .story file, we'd be happy to check and confirm if you are being affected by the same issues. Feel free to upload a copy here in the discussion, or privately through a support case.
However, the behavior you reported around:
- Instead of replacing the graphic, a new graphic is added to the screen, and the error message appears.
- Trying to drag and drop an image onto the screen gives you a black screen that you can't access
This is unexpected, and testing with version 3.101.34880.0 of Storyline, I was unable to replicate the same issues. I have some follow-up questions to help me understand your setup a little better:
- Are you working with locally-stored .story and SVG files? Working directly off of a network, or shared drive can introduce erratic behavior.
- Have you tried performing a repair of your Storyline installation to see if that resolves the error?
- Are these issues related to specific SVG files, or widespread across any SVG file you use?
- If they are local to specific files, it would be helpful to see a copy of those files as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for contacting me. Unfortunately, I'm unable to share the Storyline file as the client has not given their permission.
I have been using Storyline since 2008 and have seen many quirks. I have stored my images and projects on Google Drive for the past five years. This is the first time that I have had any issues. The release before the one I'm currently using didn't update automatically. This meant that I skipped a version. I wonder if this is the reason? I had been working on a project with SVG images before the update and did not have any freezing issues. The attached picture shows what happens. Instead of the image being replaced, a new image is superimposed, and the program freezes.
I've just upgraded to Build 3.101.34925.0, so I will do some additional checking. I will send screen grabs of the issues I come across. The two bugs you raised above are issues I've experienced.
My colleagues and I have found issues with accessibility and SVGs where the screen reader reads out 'graphic' even though the graphic has been removed from the Focus order. One of the ways we've been able to fix this is by flattening the SVG.
Thank you again, and I hope this bug can be fixed. I've lost a significant amount of productivity time due to the constant crashing.
Cheers

I wasn’t able to replicate the issue with any of my SVG files. Would you mind sharing the specific SVG that's causing the problem?
You also mentioned an error report — if you click the "information" text in that dialog, it should display the full report. Feel free to upload it here so someone can take a closer look and help troubleshoot.
