What are variables and how (and why) should I use them?

Thanks WaltHamilton​ ! This is the best explanation I have ever heard for variables. 14 years ago when I was new to eLearning and trying to learn Adobe Captivate I just couldn't wrap my head around variables and the expert trying to teach me really couldn't explain how it worked - just told me "do this" but without the understand of how and why they worked I couldn't get it.
