Don't want to embed images.
Jan 04, 2013
I am looking to findout if there is anyway to have a image not embed into the storyline but just refer to the images location. I have an image bank full of images and would rather have the published file grab the images/audio/video it needs from that folder so that each course does not create a new folder with these files. This would save on space because I use some of the same images in alot of courses. No reason to keep multiple copies of the same images. Any help would be great. thanks

No easy way, you could embed as web objects but it really is not flexible enough.
Is space really that much of a premium, the images are optimised. Not sure there is any rapid development tool that will do this
Hi Phillip,
Have you tried using WebObject? Insert a WebObject and enter the URL to where you image is located. Keep in mind you won't be able to preview the results until it's published on a web server though.
You might be able to get away with a custom Flash widget that looks at variables for image locations. That'd only work with Flash based output and you wouldn't be able to see it until you publish the output. Should work though.
Hey Phillip -
Kevin's suggestion to use Web Objects is definitely a way to go. Here's an older screencast showing one way to go about it:
Would inserting a video as a web object work the same way? Would it look the same as one that was embedded?
Yes Lynda, Video as a WebObject works the same way. Works great for streaming video, too using the Embed Code feature.
Yes, I am using the embed code but had not thought of using the WebObject option! Thanks! That's just what I needed to solve a problem today!
Thanks. Web Objects are a great idea. I have space but just hated to have a bunch of copies of the same image on the server. I like nice and clean. Also David in your video you talk about watching the size of your image so it does not resize when putting a new image in. Does that mean that Storyline does not remember what you sized the original to when placing it? I know some programs when you replace an image with a new one it keeps the attributes that were attached to the first image like; size, boarder effects, etc... Just would need to know if every time I change an image if I would need to make it the same exact size. Just some extra time if so I guess.
I'm trying this out as we would like to have centrally managed banners (not necessarily ads) show up in our courses. I'd like to reference a .jpg hosted on a server and have that appear in my courses.
I've done this by using the "Insert Video from Website" command and then placing the image in an iframe. One benefit to this is that it appears that other Storyline objects have no problem appearing over top of the iframe, which is a problem with web objects.
The problem I'm having is that I'm getting some padding at the top and left of my image. I've tried various border commands, but can't seem to get rid of the 10 or so pixels above and to the left of my image. How do I eliminate this padding? I can upload an example if this isn't clear.
Thanks,
Mike
I may have spoken too soon...When I mouse-over my menu button that I placed over my iframe, the menu button disappears. Ugh...
That is the nature of iframes in storyline 2 you can layer them with content in most browsers but mouse over will bring them to the front
That's a shame as allowing them to persist on top would add a lot of possibilities for greater functionality. I wonder if this is a technical limitation or if it can be corrected in an upgrade. I was hoping that only the web object had this limitation.
From other posts I believe this is expected behaviour at the moment so probably needs a feature request
