fade in by first level paragraph shows no text

Jun 12, 2013

Weird problem - I have a text box with some bullet points. Set it to fade in by first level paragraph. Preview - nothing displays at all. If I set it to fade in all at once the whole text box fades in as it should. Any ideas???

Hi Richard!

I'm not able to reproduce this issue on my end. Can you tell me a little more about how you have this set up, please?

Do you have the text box containing the bullet list grouped, or with any other effects other than the animation?

Are you able to share the .STORY file? I'd be happy to take a look at what's happening.

Thanks!

I've encountered similar problems. Fade In By First Level Paragraph does not work inside a group or a scroll box. In both cases, the text fails to appear.

The By First Line Paragraph animations seem to create a kind of pseudo-group-- it has multiple bars on the timeline, yet each bar is not an independently editable object in the positioning window. I've had other difficulties with nested groups. I have a suspicion that there's a connection. Either way, though, Storyline seems to have some outstanding bugs when it comes to nesting group-like objects.

For now, my production rules are these:

  1. If a function resembles a nested group, think of it as a good shortcut. It's fine to use that function; just think ahead and make sure you won't have to put it inside something else (another group or something that resembles a group, like a Scroll Box).
  2. Because of rule 1, try to design slides in a way that doesn't involve nesting the bullet points as a sub-object.
  3. If objects must be nested (i.e. other methods won't work or would take considerable time), use the following procedure:
  1. Create the sub-objects for the first sub-group.
  2. Group them together.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 as necessary, replacing "first" with "second", "third", etc.
  4. Once the subgroups are created, put them into the group (or group-like entity, such as a scroll bar) that they need to be in.
  5. Remember that you can *edit* sub-sub-objects pretty easily, but it's a nuisance to have to add new sub-sub-objects. Plan accordingly.

(Sorry for the late response; I came across this thread using a search engine to try to find information on a similar topic, and since I wound up here, I figured other people would, too; the above is what I've figured out on this topic.)

(If a staff person can confirm or refute what I've said, I'd be delighted; my knowledge of sub-groups is just based on playing around with them until I got frustrated, so maybe there's some nuance to Storyline's object nesting abilities that I've missed).
