Fading out background slide

Hi all,
I'm creating a comic-book style slide with three separate boxes which form part of a story with an audio track for each. What I'd like to do is grey-out/fade the background and make each of these boxes stand out in colour automatically when we reach the relevant audio track in the timeline. There's no user interaction on this slide.
I'd like the transition it to look like this (apologies for the poor quality):
This is a screenshot from the slide layers feature which allows you to dim non-selected layers.
I'm sure there's an easy way to do this, I just haven't found it yet!
I'd appreciate any suggestions - thanks!

Hey Adele,
Have you tried using different layers? I am attaching a quick thing I made that uses layers and triggers to switch.

Thanks Eric & Bruce, I thought it must have something to do with the layers but just couldn't figure it out. There's so many amazing things you can do with Storyline - I'll get up to speed with them all eventually!
Thanks for the example and the quick response
Adele
Here's another, "low-tech" take on this, just using different slides and a few zooms etc.
I often found that the best way to learn was to start with slides then say - "How could I now use Layers etc. to make this "tighter"?".
