HELP! My Story File Won't Preview or Publish!
Apr 29, 2013
I ran into a problem last week where my story file won't preview or publish. It appears to hang up on Slide 7. I have attempted to delete this slide and try again, but again with slide 7. I can't preview any Scenes, not just the one with slide 7. I was supposed to show my internal users the finished module on Friday and I can't even get it to work. I've read all the forum threads on here I could find about this problem and so far, nothing has worked to fix it. After I post this, I'll be submitting a ticket on my issue, but I'm in a hurry and wondering if anyone can help. Thanks so much. I love Storyline but am feeling like I'm left high and dry in front of my "customers".

Douglas,
Can you post your file and send me a PM to the link so I can test on my end?
Mike
Would love to Mike, where should I post it?
Douglas,
Do you have access to DropBox or some other such portal where you could post it for me?
Mike
Yes I do and I'm trying my dropbox account now.
I have no idea what is going on, I can't copy/paste or upload this file to anywhere, not even our internal Sharepoint site.
Douglas...
Firewall perhaps?
Not a firewall, I'm on a freestanding machine. Now I've repaired my installation, Uninstalled and reinstalled, created a new story and imported the slides from the old story file. None of it works and it is only in this file. Other story files operate normally.
I know its not easy to help me since I can't get my file uploaded. However, I discovered that all of my slides that are "corrupted" are using the same slide master layout. Any chance this could be the problem? Of 69 slides, 41 of them use a slide master I created and those are the ones that won't preview any longer.
I seem to be solving my own problem 1 step at a time. After discovering that all fo the "corrupted" slides shared the same custom slide master, I deleted it and recreated it and BOOM! It fixed it.
Doug How did you figure out that it was the master? I seemed to have missed that
I was premature in my declaration of victory. It has apparently made some slides playable, but not all.
Sandra, to answer your question, I just noticed the pattern that it seemed to only be affecting slides that used a certain custom slide layout I had created. Unfortunately for me (and the past 3 days of lost time trying to fix this), I used that layout for 40 of my 69 slides. When I deleted the content for that layout, it allowed some slides to work and I jumped to the incorrect conclusion that I had fixed it. Unsubstantiated hopes of a delerious mind, I guess. It still seems that the layout is causal not just correllary, but I will continue to strip away the parts that don't seem to work to see if I can salvage my content. Oddly, even when Import these slides - or simply just copy/paste, it continues to be dysfunctional in the new file. Grrr!
Good luck with this and please keep us informed about your progress and the solution when you find it (and when you have a chance to breathe). I am really interested in the outcome.
I have recently encountered the problem where Storyline won't preview or publish my file, and I read several threads here on the forum around the same issue. I tried all of the suggested solutions (reinstalling Storyline, reinstalling the Flash player, etc) without any luck. However, I did eventually figure out what was causing the problem, so I thought I'd post it here in case it helps anyone else.
In my case, I had created a player for my course - it wasn't a particularly complicated adaptation of the basic player, but I had several courses that I needed to have the same look and feel so I saved my changes as a custom file. It appears that this file became corrupted, and whenever I tried to preview or publish the course, I got an error message that my computer was low on memory and I should close any unneeded applications (clearly not true, as I have 16GB of RAM on this machine and only another couple of applications open).
I copied all the slides into a new, clean file and deleted the custom player, then rebuilt it and found that everything worked as it should once again. Great relief, as I was up against a deadline and not looking forward to re-creating the entire course!
Julie,
You are my new favorite person! That was totally my problem too and it was driving me nuts!
I was getting that out of memory problem too. I copied and pasted into a new file and it works perfectly now.
Thanks so much!!!!
Awesome! Glad to hear that worked for you Allison!

Hey Mike,
I happen to have the same issue. And to make it worse, my file wont finish attaching. how else can i submit to you ?
Hi Matesh!
This thread is a bit dated, but hopefully we can assist you with your issue.
Assuming you are only having difficulty with one project, I would advise that you import your file into a new file and see if that alleviates the issue.
I am also having this issue - I submitted a case with the Articulate Support team.
I am facing the same issue. My story file stopped responding to preview and publish. The file gets closed when I try to preview or publish.
Hi raga.
Thanks for reaching out. So sorry to hear you are having trouble previewing and publishing your file. I understand how frustrating that can be.
I see you've opened a support case. Great call! We'll continue the conversation over in the support case with my colleague Robert!
Have a great start to your week! ✨
