I have Storyline, do I need Quizmaker also?

Apr 22, 2013

I'm a new user to Storyline, so I don't know the full capability of Storyline yet, so I apologize if this has already been asked/answered.

I need to create quizzes to put into our LMS (we use SumTotal Learning Maestro).  The quizzes will be standalone, not part of a course.  The quiz questions need to be randomized, and timed.  Is this something Storyline can support, or do I need to get Quizmaker and import the quiz into Storyline, then into our LMS?

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Tiffany!

If you need to use Quizmaker quizzes, yes, you will need access to Quizmaker. However, you can create quizzes in Storyline as well. You don't have to design an entire course, just create a quiz and include a results slide and that's it :)

How do you envision the quizzes you'd like to create? You can customize these within Storyline, so they appear more "standalone" by modifying the player, if you'd like.

If you can give a little more information about what you'd like to do, I can try to give you some tips or share some resources with you.

Thanks and welcome again!

Thank you for replying to me Christine.  Here are some more details on my project.

The quizzes I am being asked to create are for an in-house certification program.  I need to be able to have the quiz timed, and have randomized questions.  I was thinking I could have a bank of 50 questions, and then only use 20 of them for the quiz.  If the person does not pass the quiz and retakes it, the questions might be different questions and in a different order than what they took the time before.

With these specifications, can Storyline do what i need it to do, and if so, how do I do this?  Any tips or how-to resources or how to teach myself Articulate would be very much appreciated.

(I have training on Storyline coming up very soon, but I need get to work on this project before I have my training).

Hi there Tiffany!

Certainly - though, I do want to make sure I mention one thing, first. When you randomize questions, there is no way to guarantee that the user will not see questions from their first attempt. The quiz pulls the question randomly, so the more you have to pull from the less likely the user will see similar questions on the second attempt. However, the more you pull from that group the of questions, the more likely some of the same questions will appear. 20 out of 50 shouldn't be bad, though, that seems like a reasonably "safe" number.

First, you may want to take a look at the following tutorials on question banks:

Using Question Banks

Drawing from Question Banks

When you have all of your questions set up in your question bank, and you draw from that question bank, you'll be able to choose how many of that question bank you'd like to show at a time.

For the quiz timer, you'll actually set this up with a results slide. You can insert a results slide after you've created your question bank, or even while you're still building it. When you insert your question bank, you'll be able to specify the time you'd like to allow for the quiz and you'll be able to customize how the timer is displayed.

Here's a couple of articles you might want to check out:

If you start out with the project and run into any trouble, just let me know!

Thanks very much Tiffany :)
