Jumping to a new slide from a lightbox
Aug 05, 2013
Hello -
I'm experimenting with an interactive timeline for a course in a lightbox slide. I want the learner to be able to access the timeline at any point during the course to check their progress (the images will slowly turn from B&W to color as they complete each section), and once they have completed a section I want them to be able to jump to certain points of the course for review. I've been able to figure everything out -- except the last part!
My issue is with triggers for jumping from the lightbox slide to another slide within the course. Currently, depending on the order of my triggers, it either closes the lightbox (and doesn't jump back to where I want it) or it jumps to the slide I want, but inside the lightbox. Ideally, I want the lightbox to close and I want the course to jump to the slide I've designated.
I've seen a couple threads along these lines and tried the suggestions but so far haven't been able to get this to work. Any help would be appreciated! I've attached the course as well. I haven't done any of the other triggers on the timeline slide except for the "Intro" image.

Oh, and I forgot to add that there are going to be variables for each section, so the learner can't jump forward on the timeline until they have completed a section.
I think you need to rearrange the order of the triggers.
Try this:
Hi Leigh! Just let us know how Blake's suggestion works for you and let us know if you need anything further.
Unfortunately when I flip the triggers it closes the lightbox but does not jump to the designated slide. It leaves the user on the last slide they viewed.
Hi Leslie, just checking on this - Is there a solution that I am missing, or should I submit it as a bug?
H All,
Curious to know if there's a solution, but I THINK this is the way the lightbox is designed to work. If so, it wouldn't so much be a bug, but instead a feature request. Hopefully, someone else will confirm or refute.
Leigh, you can create your own "lightbox effect" and achieve what you're after. David Anderson shows how at this support page.
I'll be watching also for replies.
It might be something in your file ... I tried to replicate this and it works for me.
Cool, Blake! I see that you're achieving this via buttons on the slide and button trigger, not player or slide triggers. Nice to know this can be done in this way. Thanks so much.
Thanks Rebecca. I tested it out adding variables to limit navigation, and when I added the variables and jumped to scenes rather than jumped to slides. It didn't work. I switched the jump to scene to jump to slide and it does.
Check it out.
Hi
Does any body know if this is possible?
Trish Cox
Hi Trish,
This is a known issue with the "close lightbox" trigger and the "jump to scene" trigger as described here:
You may find that a Close lightbox trigger doesn't work as expected when it's preceded by a Jump to scenetrigger.
This is a known issue. It'll be fixed in the next software update for Articulate Storyline. In the meantime, you can avoid this behavior by using a Jump to slide trigger (and selecting the first slide of the appropriate scene) rather than a Jump to scene trigger.
Hi everybody.
Can we take the control of close button of a lightbox ? (little red button with an X)
Thanks
Hi Gustavo,
The little red button with the X on a lightbox is automatically created when you set a slide to open in a lightbox, so there is not a way to access it to add a trigger or change it's color. It is something I'd encourage you to share in the form of a feature request providing some specific detail about what you'd like to do with it.
ARGH! I don't want to use variables, I don't want to split my course into scenes.
How can this work? I just want to light box to a slide, (with navigation controls), and when the user clicks the "Next" button, I want it to advance to the next slide WITHOUT having the light box.
I have tried all ways above and nothing.
Please help, this can't be this complicated to get a light box to close and go to the next slide without that slide being a light box. (I've also added the trigger, "close light box when User click the Next button).
Any help is appreciated!
Kim
Hi Kim,
The issue previously mentioned was corrected in Update 5, and we're now on update 6. Do you know what update you're using?
Can you tell us a bit more about your set up and possibly share a bit of the .story file here with us?
I'm running into this with Storyline 2 Update 4. I checked for updates and there aren't any available. My lightbox has 2 triggers on the player next button- jump to next scene and close lightbox. I've tried flipflopping the order, but that didn't make a difference. I also tried jumping to a specific slide instead of next scene. The lightbox closes but does not proceed. Was this issue not fixed in Storyline 2?
Hi Coral!
Would you be able to share your .story file for us to take a look at?
Here it is:

Hi Carol!
The built in buttons do not seem to working as you wish. I placed a button on your slide and put the same triggers and it seems to work as expected, so perhaps if you remove the built in button from your lightbox slide, this will do what you expect.
Hmm, I find it misleading that the player buttons work differently based on if the slide is lightboxed or not. I removed the player navigation and added an object on the slide that the user can click on to trigger the Close and Next actions. Thank you for your help!
Thanks for the update.
To possibly add on to this thread, I recently ran into this issue when attempting to jump from a rectangle shape on a lightbox slide to a regular slide in my course file. Initially, I had the shape set up with 3 states -- Normal, Hover, and Down, with the Down state to accommodate for tablet users that would not see the Hover state -- and it would never function correctly. Then, I reduced it down to having 2 states only -- Normal and Hover -- and everything worked. I'm not entirely sure why the extra Down state would have caused issues, but now that it's gone, I can appropriately jump from my lightbox slide to a regular slide with using the Close Lightbox When The User Clicks and Jump To Slide When The User Clicks triggers for the rectangle shape.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing Betsy :)
I had this same problem and after reading this thread, I made a bit of a cheat. Trigger on starting slide "Variable x changes > show slide layer (setting to hide everything else)" + Trigger on new slide layer "Variable changes > lightbox slide y". That way, as soon as you switch to the new slide layer, the lightbox opens, hiding the new slide layer until you close the lightbox.
Hi Jeff! This thread is a bit dated, but we always appreciate users sharing solutions :) I appreciate you popping in and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)
