Localization – How to customize the language selection screen in Rise 360 or Storyline 360?

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m currently working on a multilingual course using the new localization features in Articulate 360, and I’ve tested the built-in language selector available in Rise 360 and Storyline 360.

I’d like to know if there’s a way to customize the language selection screen to make it more visually appealing and aligned with our branding — for example:

  • Display a custom message like:
“To start, please select your preferred language” /
“Pour commencer, veuillez choisir votre langue”
  • Add a logo or background image
  • Use a custom layout, colors, or design
  • Replace the dropdown with visual buttons (flags, icons, etc.)

I understand this may involve creating a manual welcome screen, especially in Storyline 360, but I wanted to check if the localization feature allows any kind of customization out of the box.

Has anyone already customized the language selection interface successfully? Or are there workarounds you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your insights! 🙏

We haven't done our Localization trial yet, but I did come across this article today.

Articulate Localization: Publish Multi-Language Rise 360 Courses | Articulate - Community

So if we're using an LMS we can publish multiple languages in one SCORM file then the learner can pick from one of the languages. I'm looking forward to testing that feature soon. I agree with Erick's need to customize the page to instruct the learner to select their preferred language. If they don't speak English, how would they know what to do? Especially because it's in a drop down menu. If there were buttons visible listing the languages it might make it more intuitive.

Right now, we build our Rise courses with bilingual branching and publish settings set to mark complete when they've reached 50% of the course (because that would mean they completed either the English or Spanish branch). At the beginning of the course, we have a language selection page. Depending on the learner's preference they are taken down one path or the other. AndrewBlemings- See screenshot for an example of our "homemade" language selector.

What I'd like to confirm is, when using the Localization feature, if the UI buttons can be set to display with the chosen language. Right now when we do bilingual courses we have to add bilingual text (Continue / Continuar) to the shared buttons, like in a Rise scenario block. This usually results in the text being too long for the button. We've recently tried to instruct the learners to click the >> button, eliminating the need to show both languages spelled out. Hopefully with Localization the need to add bilingual buttons and quiz questions would be eliminated. StevenBenassi can you confirm that the UI can be personalized to display only the chosen language when publishing multiple languages in one SCORM file?

    • Hi CRios!

      Happy to help!

I can confirm that the UI of the language selection screen cannot yet be customized in any capacity. I understand the need for this functionality, and I've relayed your feedback to our product team.

In the meantime, if your goal is to only display one language to a learner, I suggest publishing that course as a single language SCORM package, in lieu of the multi-language option.

Please let me know if you need anything else!

        Hi StevenBenassi,

Chiming in here as well, a huge +1 from me and my team. We need to be able to build our own "language selection" slides for example, just like a regular Storyline slide, so it can fit with the many branding rules we face for various clients. Additionally, if this is not possible the current 'slide' needs to be more clear/intuitive.

        Thanks!

This is helpful, thank you. My attempts to upload multi-language zips to our LMS spits back an error about incompatible content.

I only really use Storyline so maybe people are assuming it can do what Rise can do, but I can find nothing anywhere in SL’s publish settings that adds a language selection screen.

i wondered if perhaps it was published at runtime but I’ve been on the localization pilot for most of this year and it’s single-package multilingual outputs have only ever been a zip of zip, each a translated dupe of the English version. Even the Art developer my coworker spoke with didn’t actually know how other testers were creating or seeing a language selection screen.

        Hi AndrewBlemings-!

Glad to see CRios has been helping you!

I just wanted to pop in and share that the language selection screen is automatically generated by the publishing process, when exporting a SCORM package. I understand you'd like to have more control over the aesthetics of that page, and I've shared this feedback with our product team!

Also, if you're running into errors when uploading a multi-language SCORM package to your LMS, I suggest testing the published output in an LMS test environment like SCORM Cloud. If the course loads and plays successfully in SCORM Cloud, please connect with your LMS administrator to see if something could be getting in the way, within the LMS environment.

However, if the course also fails to load in SCORM Cloud, please connect with our team through a support case.

They'd be happy to troubleshoot this further with you!

  • Thanks so much for your quick reply!

I really appreciate the clarification. I’ll definitely use the logo option in the Player Features as you suggested — that's helpful for branding purposes.

    As a follow-up question:

👉 Is there any known workaround to customize the initial language selection screen, or a way to simulate a more visual welcome slide with buttons, images, and introductory text — even if it requires a manual setup?

I’d love to offer a more engaging start screen for learners before they choose their language.

Thanks again for your support and for forwarding the feedback to the product team!

      Hi ErickSpariha352!

You're welcome. Thanks for following up!

Currently, there are no available workarounds to customize the language selection screen as you've described. I've ensured that your voice has been heard, and relayed all of this feedback to our development team.

Have a great rest of your week!

  • Hi ErickSpariha352 & JoaneMiron-e598!

    Happy to help!

Currently, Articulate Localization does not offer a built-in way to customize the language selection screen for learners. Thanks for letting us know this functionality is important to you! I've shared your feedback with our product team.

Also, I would like to highlight that Storyline does allow authors to include a logo, within the Player itself.

This option can be found under the Home Tab > Player Properties > Player Features (Logo).

Please let me know if you have anymore questions!

  • My team and I are currently testing Articulate Localization during the trial period, and we had the same question—how to customize the language selection screen. While it's great to offer courses in multiple languages, having the language selection screen available in only one language can be a barrier for users who don’t understand it or for whom it’s not their native language.

I’d also be very interested in any solutions or workarounds for this.
