Math Project Idea in Storyline

Aug 28, 2013

I have a math project in mind but since I am just starting out in Storyline, I am not sure if I can do it in Storyline or if there is another product that would be a better fit.

I am in the process of flipping my classroom. Rather than have my math students just watch a video explaining a math concept and some example problems then try some on their own, I would like to do the following...

Have a platform (Storyline?) where they can still watch the video. Then it would move to a "You try it" page(s) where they would try doing problems as demonstrated in the video. If they get the problem wrong, they could link to a short explanation video of how those types of problems are done. Then another "You try it". If correct, they would get some sort of "Way to go" animation.

They would continue until they get say 5 right in a row and then they would be able to "level up" to more difficult.

Ideally I would like to make all of the Storyline math units part of a "game" where points and badges are awarded.

Sounds extremely complicated and beyond Storyline but you never know until you ask.

Thanks!

Bill, the real challenge here is the logical design / learning design of everything you want students to do!

I can't see anything you plan that Storyline itself would have a problem with.

With the use of branching, variables and states you should be able to do all of this. I would start looking at help / tutorials for SL and fire questions at the forum when you get stuck.  You can always send in a part-completed or problem storyline file and many kind souls here will spot the problems for you.

From what I've seen and seeing what other people have done.  Most of this is possible with storyline, but  you will have to apply some out of the box solutions. You can do the video and "you try it" questions, (as long as you keep it to just answer text boxes), but the badges and levels are another thing.

Once a student closes the storyline page, they lose all information. So all the badges and leveling up wouldn't be saved, unless you use some javascript to store info on an external databases. I've seen this done on this thread where they kept track of user scores, but I haven't seen anyone pull in info from an external database.  I'm sure it's possible, but if you are not comfortable with javascript than you'll have to find someone that is.  If you don't have some extreme hackers in your class, than maybe a simple xml based database will suffice.

If you don't need to save the badges or levels than it doesn't really matter.  You could use just use a score based system like the example and have your students compete for the highest score.  1st Correct answers would be worth the most points, and than a retry will lower the points worth by a few points.

Hi Bill,

Have you seen Mathletics?  I was a K-12 teacher prior to jumping into the world of e-learning development/consulting.  Mathletics is a great site full of math games used to reinforce concepts.  My own kids are big fans and it has created a love for math unlike anything I've seen   It's not the solution you are asking about, but I thought I would pass it along to maybe generate some creative ideas.
