Note-taking in/from a Storyline lesson?

Feb 17, 2013

Hey there,

I've been tasked with determining if it is possible for learners to make notes during a lesson created/published from Storyline.

The notes could be taken within some sort of custom window, or even with a 3rd-party application, such as Evernote.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Cheers,

Jamie

Hey Christine,

That's a great question - I should have put that in the initial posting.

The client didn't really specify, however, my assumption would be that ideally, the learner should have the option to save the notes, print them, or maybe even email them to themselves. Potentially, they could even be able to go back into the lesson and modify their existing notes.

Essentially, we're looking for some sort of integrated window within the lesson.

Not sure how much of this is possible, but we're looking to provide the client with a few options to choose from.

Cheers,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

It might be best to find out what your client would prefer, simply because it becomes a bit complicated with some of the examples you mentioned. For instance, emailing results isn't something that's built into Storyline. Unfortunately, there’s no way to email results easily, accurately, and consistently. For example, if you use Gmail or your computer’s security settings are high, you can’t email results. Also, you run the risk of learners tampering with results since they can access the email before it’s sent. Given these limitations, we decided not to include the email results feature in our products anymore.

To submit information through email, you'd need to use JavaScript (which isn't supported by Articulate). However, there are some pretty helpful and informative posts around the forums from community members on this topic that may be helpful.

Now, if you're just wanting this panel to display for the user and have them review it later, you could certainly do this with variables. Then, if you wanted the learner to view the content they entered, you could call upon that variable to display it in a final slide. Again, just a thought though, since I'm not sure how you'd like to design the course.

Another suggestion you may want to consider; try posting over in our Building Better Courses section, as well. You'll get some additional exposure to your question. I'm sure some of our awesomely talented community members can share some awesome ideas on this.

I'm curious to see what you end up using. Please feel free to share!

Hey there,

It's not really that important that they can be changed - this is about notes, not scores or pass/fa

But it's a great point about the Gmail and web-based mail clients.

Therefore, it's about being able to take notes inline with the course and make those notes available to the learner.

Thanks for the feedback - I will also post in the other forum as you suggested.

Cheers,

Jamie
