Peek Control GUI disappearing
Apr 05, 2017
I am trying to record short videos for a elearning. Peek opens fine for me and I can select what I want to record and the GUI appears to click the record button but as soon as the countdown is over it disappears and I have no way to pause or end the recording w/o accessing peek again from the start menu.
I thought maybe it was a settings/preference issue but when the GUI is open I can't access the preferences.
Edited to add it only does this when the controls are on the top of my screen. When I shrink my box and move the controls to the bottom and lose some of the recording area then it works fine.

Hi Milissa,
If you're recording the entire screen it'll keep the option to pause or end the screen recording in your tool bar - here's a quick look at how that appears on my Mac with Chrome browser.
Let me know if that's not what you're seeing or have any other questions!
I am also having this issue. I can't end the recording unless I open my task manager and end task, and then the recording disappears.
Hi Ashley
I'm interested to see your Peek - but getting a 404 - do they only last so many days?

A Droplr link expires - a Peek never does...but I couldn't Peek my instance of Peek. Not to worry - I created a new one. 😃 Here's a quick Droplr video of how to pause or end the Peek recording if you've gone full screen.
Thanks Ashley you're a ⭐️
Thank you for the video. I am on a thinkpad so it isn't showing up in the toolbar.
Hi Milissa,
I'm so used to creating Peek's on my Mac side - but here's a quick look at where the Pause/End settings go on my Windows 10 Environment!
Hope that helps you track it down on your end. 😀
Hi Ashley, I'm having the same issue with finding the Pause / End Settings once the recording starts. This video link you provided to show us where it goes, stops as soon as the Peek countdown begins. Thanks!
Hi Liz,
In both videos for Mac and Windows 10 you'll see the play/pause icon disappears to the overall Windows docking section. The video above continued to play for me - but it sounds like you couldn't see it? Can you share what environment you're using to record with Peek and watch my video? Then I can offer some other ideas!
I'm getting the same issue as Liz, Ashley. I've tried all the links above and can't see any of them.
I'm using Windows 10
Thanks Wendy - sorry also to hear that my links aren't working! I tested them in another browser window, and they played fine for me, so not anything to do with being logged into my Articulate account. I'll share the video you sent me Wendy with our team to take a better look at why you're not seeing those options as I can't replicate it myself. 😕
I'll be back in touch soon!
Hi all,
Thanks for your patience while our team looked into this! We're still having a hard time replicating the issue (thanks Wendy for demonstrating!) where the Peek icon in the desktop tray doesn't allow you to end the recording.
So I had some additional questions to help us track it down:
Let me know if you can share answers to those questions and we'll dig in further!
Hi Ashley
I was trying to record full screen. I had rebooted the machine, updated Windows 10 but not repaired Peek - which i have done now and it is working and giving me the popup options to end the recording.
To confirm the only way to end a recording is from the desktop tray Peek icon there is no Esc to stop?
Thank -you
Hi Wendy,
Glad the repair worked - sorry I didn't think of that sooner!
You can set custom shortcuts for ending a recording - and those are within the Preferences for Peek. You can get there from the little cog icon and then you'll see that you can change the shortcuts for pause/end:
I was able to key in the Esc key and use it there. Let me know if you run into any difficulty with that!
Ok two steps forward one step back. I can now get the popup with the options but when I select the cog wheel I get two options preferences & quit but neither is clickable for me.
I think I'm cursed ;-)
That or it's just Monday? 😉
Do they act like they're clickable (i.e. mouse cursor changes or you can see the "click" action)?
I also can't remember if you're on a Mac or not - if you are, does the Peek for Mac work? What VM do you use to run Windows?
Hi Wendy,
One other thought! Have you checked what DPI setting you're using? If you're not using 100% could you try to adjust to that? My colleague had that idea thinking that a DPI setting of 125% or higher could be contributing to an issue - let me know if you can give that a test.
Hi Ashley
See attached video - I get the options but no mouse cursor change and not clickable).
I'm working on Windows laptop at the moment and DPI is set to 100% - I already checked that.
I do have a iMac so I'll open Peek on that and see what happens
Hi Wendy,
Thanks for that video. I'm still not seeing the same behavior, and was talking with one of our Engineers for Peek about it this morning.
He thinks there may be something running in the background taxing the system and not allowing Peek to function properly. One way to narrow this down, is to close or stop any programs that you don't immediately need to see if that solves the problem. You can do this from the task manager or the tray menu (right click on the icons and exit out of the program) and do the same for any in the taskbar.
Let me know if that resolves the behavior and then our team can try to reproduce it based on what you closed/stopped. Also if the Mac version of Peek works, that's helpful info too!
Hi Ashley
Ok I closed down everything and just had Peek and Chrome open. I still don't get a mouseover but I can click the Preferences and Quit options and they behave as expected.
I haven't tested Mac yet but I'll let you know if there is any different behaviour.
Thanks for keeping up with this. I've changed my end recording to Esc key - happy days :-)
Thanks Wendy for checking those - and glad that it helped. Our team is taking a look at the resources used and see what else we can do to prevent this behavior in the future.
I am trying to click on the Preferences of Peek to set up and nothing happens when I click on it.
Hi there, Lisa! Are you using Peek in a Mac or in a Windows environment?
Can you try to quit Peek and relaunch it from your Desktop app?
If that has no effect, please try these steps and let me know how you make out!
I am on Windows 7 on a PC, does that make a difference?

Hi Lisa,
The steps in there should work for repairing Peek too - and you'll also find the system requirements for Peek for Windows here.
Also, Looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email! No worries, this Peek video will show you how to remove it.
