Best Practice for Timeline Video?

Jun 06, 2017

Looking to insert videos in a timeline. I would assume this is possible by mention of the ability to enter a web address or an iframe. So for example,I dropped this in:

<iframe src="https://globalnews.ca/video/embed/2249942/" width="670" height="437" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The timeline block is blank. So can these timeline entries handle video, and if so what is up with the example I posted?

Hi James,

Thanks for sharing that embed code! I also tested it in Rise in the timeline lesson and the Video embed block and I saw the same behavior. I'm going to share this with our team as a possible software bug.

From here, I’ll meet with my team to take a closer look so we can determine next steps. Sometimes my team catches errors in my logic and we don’t have a bug after all. Of course, if that’s the case, I’ll let you know!

Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed quickly, while others take longer to resolve. Here's more information on how we identify and tackle bugs.

I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update on this issue. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry if it’s slowing you down.

No worries, I get it. My quick interest in Rise is the fact that I'm setting up a Fortune 500 company and have recommended Rise as our primary system for learning delivery within our LMS. So as some folks file bugs as complaints, features and bug fixes make my case stronger for the migration and increase internal potential for growth.

Hey again, James!

What's actually happening here is a quirk in modern browser security.  Rise is a secure (HTTPS) application, and modern browsers don't like it when you embed insecure (HTTP) content in a secure page.

Now, the embed code you provided above appears to be secure, but if you copy the https://globalnews.ca/video/embed/2249942/ URL and paste it into this nifty checker tool, you'll see that your URL actually redirects to an insecure page.  That's a problem with Global News.

Having said that, a quick web search shows that the same video is available on YouTube, so you could try pasting https://youtu.be/qLaO2gzLL8I into your course instead!

Good luck with your project.
