Embed Block forcing a redirect to Google Drive??

Aug 05, 2019

Hi,

I'm currently using the Embed block in Rise to link to an externally hosted PDF. This PDF lives on our own LMS, and is not hosted on Google Drive. When I 'Pop-out' the PDF to view it full screen, the URL redirects to: https://drive.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=https://localLMS/hosteddoc.pdf

This behavior is the same in Chrome, Firefox and IE, even if I log out of my Google account. Is there something Rise is doing in the embed block that is forcing this redirect, so that the PDF must open via the Google Drive app? Or is this something I can control on my end, through browser settings?

I also noticed that this behavior cannot be repeated in Storyline 360 - it's unique to Rise, which is why I'm thinking it could be a bug. Thanks for your help!

Hi Matt!

We use Embedly to embed rich media in Rise 360 courses. Embedded PDF files opening in Google Drive is a function of Embedly, so what you're seeing is expected behavior.

You may be able to work around this by embedding the document in the lesson using an iFrame code. Use the formula <iframe src="URL"></iframe>, and just replace URL with the link for the PDF you want to embed.

Hi Matthew and Alyssa,

Thanks for the quick response. This was driving me nuts - I'm glad I was onto something with the Google Drive redirect.

Our company just started blocking access to services like Google Drive and Dropbox, so unfortunately, we won't be able to use the 'Embed' block in our Rise courses going forward. Maybe something to keep in mind for future releases of Rise? Thanks again!
