Image Resolution affecting LMS load time?

May 20, 2020

Hi there -

We've been using the highest-available resolution for photo jpgs when downloading them from our provider, and counting on the lovely Rise tools to downsize as appropriate. However, we have been noticing long initial load times in the LMS. Could we help the load times by manually downsizing a 6000px image to say 1500 or 2000px before uploading to Rise? Or is this a LMS/lag time issue?

Thanks!

Hi Angela! If you're noticing this slow loading particularly in media-heavy courses, I think it's a good idea to investigate. Rise 360 will retain the original image size so it can be delivered in the best quality on screens of all sizes.

First, test your output in another LMS environment. We use SCORM Cloud to see how content launches. If you are still seeing slow loading, I would then explore decreasing your media file sizes.

Thank you - we're in a bit of a tough spot as we're technically not supposed to upload content that has our vendors' screens onto scorm cloud for security purposes :(. We could create a "dummy" course with big images in it to see if there is a difference. Is there a chance you could share guidance as to "biggest needed" resolution for a jpg file, so we could try that & see if it helps? We use iStockPhoto (which is awesome - but it *does* give us images big enough to create huge print posters, which obviously will be beyond what even the biggest online viewing would need!)
