LMS hangs when completing a RISE SCORM activity

Jul 28, 2022

We have a long video (around 1hr long, 230MB), which we want all our learners to watch in full. To keep track of their viewing progress, we built a RISE course, uploaded the video in it, disabled forward syncing, published to SCORM and uploaded the SCORM package to our LMS (Totara Learn).

The problem is that when more than 7-8 people have the SCORM activity open, the platform becomes very slow or completely unresponsive.

We also tried:

  • Splitting the video into smaller clips (separate lesson for each clip)
  • Packaging the video in Articulate Storyline instead of RISE as as SCORM

... and the issue persists.

What is weird is that when we upload the original video on the LMS and the same group of users watch it, there are no performance issues at all. We just lose the tracking capabilities Articulate offers, which are really important to us in this case.

I would like to point out that we have explored many possible hardware and software limitations before contacting you (CPU, RAM, bandwidth, firewall, PHP memory limits etc.) with our server experts, and do not detect any issues on the server level.

As a matter of fact, server resources are way below their maximum thresholds at all times, even during times when the LMS is completely unresponsive.

This leads us to believe that the issue is somewhere at the Content authoring tool (Articulate RISE and Storyline)- e.g. how streaming is handled, or a limitation of the video tracking code.

Any knowledge or help would be appreciated :)

Hi Panayiotis!

Sorry to hear that you experiencing video playback issues when viewing the Rise or Storyline course in your LMS.

Can you test if the same issue occurs if you upload your Rise/Storyline course with video into SCORM Cloud? If the issue persists here, we suggest starting a case so our support team may look into this issue closely.
