We are developing in Rise 360, using Lato for headings and text.
Several reviewers have said that they could not read the text well in flashcards, tabs, clickable images.
I am against using bold as I do not feel this is the right approach, although cannot find any evidence against either, or a better solution. Any ideas to make the text more readable?

The only option for flashcards and tabs under your direct control is to make the text bold.
I know that you are against making the text bold, but ever since we've made that change, nobody has complained about readability.
It might not look great, but at least the text is readable.
