I think this is very important. If the LRS is not available the learner should be informed immediately. If the learner continues, none of their progress or results will be stored.
The LRS might not be available for legitimate reasons such as authorisation token expiry.

Right now, there isn’t a way to detect that the course is no longer communicating with the LRS.
However, we do have a feature request in the queue for this. I will add your voice to the discussion.
