Send an Email Within Rise
Jul 10, 2017
Good morning,
Does anyone know if we can use the mailto: code to create a new email from a link within Rise?
Example, I'd like to have a link in a Contact section that will open a new email to that address instead of the user having to copy/paste.
I tried using the mailto: link with a button, and by adding a link to plain text, but Rise is automatically putting http:// in front of it.
Any suggestions or a workaround? Thanks.

you could either use a javascript trigger or use a url shortening site with a mailto link
Luke,
This issue has been discussed previously, and unfortunately the "mailto:" link is unsupported. See more on this discussion here.
Thanks Phil and Martin. I'll check out those solutions.
Thanks for linking that discussion, Martin!
How long has Rise been out and there's still not a way to do something as simple email link? Let's get this fixed!
Hi Tom,
It's an idea we've shared with our team as a feature request! We keep track of all the requests we receive and prioritize them based on customer impact, the current set up and available workarounds, and time/effort to implement.
The mailto: option is one we have submitted to our team and in their hands to figure out next steps and feasibility - but I do know that the email trigger in Storyline met a few external roadblocks which I imagine could also happen in Rise.
We'll keep you posted here, thanks again for sharing your need of this!
Hi all,
Just a quick update - we also added support for Mailto Support in Button blocks. Take a look at this quick Peek on how to add it.
Thank you Ashley! This is great news.
Thanks for adding that. I'll use it but it still feels like a work around as many times I need a plain text link that goes to an email instead of a web page. I hope they're still looking at that feature. If I enter mailto:me@email.com it converts it to http://mailto:me@email.com which doesn't work.
Adding my two cents. It would be preferable to use a plain text link instead of a button block for mailto links.
Are there any updates? Thanks!
Hi Janet,
We haven't shipped any changes to this feature yet, but we'll let you know if we do!
Any additional update here? I appreciate the button mailto: fix, but it is restrictive. Any update on the ability to do this with simply hyperlinked text?

Let me know if I can help with anything else!
Hi,
Would be good to have the mailto: feature using hyperlinked text within a sentence. Any timescale of when this may be available please?
Thanks

Hmmm...I just tried the button option and even that didn't work. :-(
Hi Tracy!
Did you set the button destination to Email and type an email address in the field below? If so, what happened when you tested the button?
Here is how the button option works for me.
If the button Send an email option is used, a button click will open the default email client such as Outlook. The email address you entered for the button will be automatically entered as the recipient and the course name will appear as the subject line.
Tracy, what happens in your case?
Thanks Karl. I used a button form, selected Send an e-mail, put in my e-mail address t.martin@business.uq.edu.au and thought it would be all fine. When I tried to use the button as a learner, it didn't attempt to create an e-mail, or even show the mailto: code when I moused over the button. totally sad face...
Yep, did exactly that.
Hi Tracy!
I thought it would be helpful to show you a screen recording of what I'm seeing on my side. Check out this short video!
Could you share a similar recording of what you're seeing? Thanks!
Good news, folks! You can now insert a
mailto:
hyperlink using the text editor.Simply refresh your browser window, then insert the hyperlink. Let us know if you run into any trouble!
Can confirm that it works.
Thank you!
I can't tell what icon you are selecting to send an email.
Please give me the basic steps to insert an email address.
Select the text you want to attach an email address to.
The text formatting toolbar will pop up as soon as you select the text.
Select the Insert Link icon (top row, far right).
enter mailto: followed by the email address.
