Bookmarking and completion in Rise

Jan 23, 2017

I have just built a course in Rise. When I export it as SCORM 1.2 to load in our LMS (Success Factors) it is not bookmarking or recording complete. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Louise,

At the moment, a re-launched Rise course will always reach out to the LMS and ask for the suspend data needed to resume the learner's previous attempt at the course (in contrast to Storyline, where you have a few other options).

Some Learning Management Systems have features that will allow you to force a new attempt on the learner after completion, thereby declining to provide the suspend data needed to resume.

So with that in mind I'd also want to know if you're been able to replicate the same behavior in SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing LMS content. If you're seeing it happen there as well we'll want to take a look at your Rise export and do some testing ourselves, so can you upload that exported Rise course to our team using the form here?

We'll evaluate additional resume features in the future, and we'd invite you to share your input here!

Thanks Ashley. I tested the module in SCORM cloud and it bookmarks there. I will try and load the file but since it includes a lot of video it's really big.

I guess my main question is whether there's anything I can adjust in the settings to try and fix this. It sounds a bit like I can't, though. Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to rebuild it in Storyline, which is a shame.

Hi Louise,

Glad to hear it's working in SCORM Cloud - did you reach out to your LMS team to see if they had any other thoughts about the bookmarking behavior? There isn't a setting to change this within Rise currently, but it's certainly something we could look at if you wanted to share your thoughts as a feature request!

I've just come across this thread, and as a couple of my clients use SuccessFactors, I'm concerned.  If Rise is not able to bookmark and send completion to SuccessFactors, one of the major players in the LMS market, that sounds like something more urgent than a feature request.  It sounds more like a basic functionality missing in Rise that needs to be put in place as soon as possible.  I'm sure you intend Rise to be able to play "out of the box" with at least the major LMS players in the market.  Are other folks able to accomplish bookmarking and completion between Rise courses and SuccessFactors...?

I would very much like to hear from others on this point. I have been mentioned Rise to my clients, as they are starting to show interest in mobile learning, but I wouldn't be able to recommend the tool unless I was 100% confident it played well with SuccessFactors.

Thanks for any details anyone can share!

Thanks for adding your voice to this thread, Andrew.

Our talk of a possible Rise feature was surrounding the additional Prompt to Resume/Always Resume/Never Resume options that you'll find in Storyline.  You should expect Rise courses to resume and complete as expected in any SCORM- or AICC-compliant LMS (with xAPI soon to come)!

We've made some important updates to Rise since Louise's post in January (including several related to LMS compatibility).  Have you tried a Rise course in SuccessFactors?  If not, we'd invite you to do so today and let us know right away if you have any trouble.

Thanks again, Andrew!

Hi - not sure if this is a bookmarking issue as well. Built my first Rise e-learn :) which I can launch and runs great. Second time I launch the e-Learn it won't load :( I get a blank screen and no e-learn. Is there any thing I can change in Rise to make it work please? I have checked in with our LMS system support (Kallidus) and they suggested clear cache and browser history but it still won't launch. Any suggestions?

Thank you - Ruth

Good Afternoon Ruth, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

There are 2 ways you can troubleshoot this problem:

  1. You can upload your exported LMS content from Rise and upload it to SCORM Cloud for testing.  This is a great way to determine if the problem is specific to Kallidus, and if the problem is reproducible in SCORM Cloud, we'd love to know about it!
  2. You can enable LMS Debug Mode and watch the communication flowing back and forth between your Rise course and your Learning Management System.

Either method will tell you more about what's happening here.  Please let us know how you make out!

I have the same problem with a Rise course, it doesn't save completion markings (or bookmarks) and progress bar falls back to nothing or very low when you login a second time. Course does not work in Scorm Cloud. Totara is our LMS.  Seems to work differently with different user. Worked fine when I tested with my own user in the LMS, but after updating the course once the problem started. This is an ongoing course and lots of users is already in the course.

I have an ongoing case at Articulate already but after reading this thread where the first comment is posted 4 mounths ago, I am getting worried if you cannot solve the problem. You don't seem to have a solution to this yet. Please, tell me I am wrong.

Ashame since Rise is a terrific tool.

Hello Andrew.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was advised to try switching off compatability mode to resolve this. The problem was that those settings changes would have caused other problems for existing courses in the system.

Unfortunately for me the only available option was to rebuild the course in SL360. A pity, but there you go.

Thanks for adding your voice to this thread, Louise.  You've highlighted something that's important to share with the community, and I'm going to amplify it a bit.

Rise publishes HTML5-only courses that work in most modern browsers.  See this article for a list of supported browsers.  Rise courses don't use Flash Player.

If Compatibility View is enabled in Internet Explorer 11, your Rise course won't work.  Compatibility View mimics Internet Explorer 7, which doesn't have support for HTML5 content.

In organizations where compatibility mode is mandated, we'd suggest using another modern browser.  Or, if you can disable Compatibility Mode, we'd recommend doing that.

Please let us know if you have other questions!

Justin and Louise--Thank you both for your input.  It's very helpful to know the issue with IE11 and Compatibility View.  I will see if that applies with my customers who use Success Factors.  They are also looking for ability to have a custom set of navigation buttons, and transparencies in text boxes and backgrounds, and it sounds like Rise may not be there yet with those features anyway.  I look forward to giving Rise a try all the same, as I have other customers who might benefit from it.

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know we released a fix just now for the issue where lengthy Rise courses wouldn't always resume correctly in an LMS.  This update is already available to you in Rise, though you'll need to export a Rise course again to update your existing published output with this new fix.

Hi Justin,

Thanks so much for the advice, but my e-learn will not launch a second time. I have tested in SCORM cloud I get incomplete which suggests the course is still active and this is why it won't re-launch. My LMS support team say:

"I had a load of browser debug consoles open to try to see if I can see anything obvious, and I found that when I closed the content, I saw no 'LMS: Finish' command sending back. So it might be that the content still thinks the content session is active, so doesn't load anything? And also, have you tried removing all bookmarking just as a test? Not sure if you can do that in Rise, but it might be worth a shot."

Can you advise how I can turn off bookmarking please?

Thanks

Ruth

Hi, Ruth!

Rise courses will always bookmark and resume.  I've been closely following your conversation with Ashley and your Case with Lea, and I'm a bit puzzled about why your course works OK for us in SCORM Cloud, but not for you.  Let's get this figured out!

I've escalated your Support Case for a closer look, and we'll be in touch with you shortly with next steps.

Ruth Mahoney

OK thank you I will pass this on to my LMS Support team however they have said today they cannot do anything more on this for me which means I have just purchased Articulate 360 and I can't use Rise and we really needed Rise.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

Just wanted to also give you a heads up that responding via email includes your signature here in ELH. You are welcome to visit the forum discussion and click on the "edit" below your post to remove that information. No worries on our part - just in case you don't want your information publicly!

Hi Valentino.

Sorry to hear you've hit a snag!

If the bookmarking and completion worked in SCORM Cloud you'll want to reach out to your LMS admin to see if they have any thoughts. SCORM Cloud is a standard for testing SCORM Content so it provides a good indication of how a course should behave.

You could enable the LMS debug to see what data is being passed from Rise to your LMS (or SCORM Cloud). That would provide some more info to troubleshoot with.

Let me know if you need anything else!
