Camtasia MP4 Export to Rise

Oct 03, 2017

Hi Guys,

I've had a look through a few of the forums but am still struggling with this. I'm using Camtasia Recorder to record my screen using Widescreen (16:9) 1080p HD (1920 x 1080) screen size. I produce it using the same dimensions through Camtasia Studio. With the production, I go through Custom Production Settings, select MP4 - Smart Player, and set the video settings to max on quality. When I playback the MP4 video, the quality looks great for what I need. However when I upload the MP4 video in to Rise (through Blocks - Video) the quality is no where near as good - I'm guessing with the compression. Is there a different way I can do this to get better quality videos in Rise?

Thanks,

Beck

Hi Beck,

Without seeing the video you're using, I'd start with the Rise best practices here.  If you have the video hosted somewhere have you tried embedding it in Rise using the URL/embed lesson type?

Brian,

I'm not incredibly familiar with Camtasia - do you normally upload that output to your web server and then folks can use the interactive elements? If so, you could use that same web URL in Rise.

Keep in mind, Rise uses secure https, so embedded content must also use https to work properly. Make sure the source URL for your content starts with https—assuming the website that hosts your content supports it.

Partly because of the compression/quality I've gone to putting any videos that I want to include in a course on our 3rd party hosting platform (Wistia) and then using an embed to display it. This way, Wistia is in control of the presentation/quality of the video and not subject to Rise's compression.

Another advantage of going this route is that I can update the video without the need to republish the entire course should any changes be necessary. In a lot of ways, I'm just using Rise as a responsive frame to present content that I can host in other locations.

I have the same question as Brian. We don't have an internal hosting platform, nor can I use anything external due to the confidential nature of our learning content. I want to publish the  player files to make the video captions work properly (i.e. being able to toggle them on/off). Has anyone found a workable solution to this that doesn't involve managing a separate captions file, or relying on an additional hosting platform?

Hey, any update here team? Just using Rise for the first time to incorporate a Camtasia project video with CC... Like Brian's Q, their Smart Player is needed for advanced features like hotspots, quizzes, a TOC, CC... you're likely familiar but it's their HTML5 player essentially. But, something like a Scorm package, your project output folder includes not only the core MP4 but all the other files. So can this be used with Rise or no? If so, what to do - zip the project folder and import that to Rise?

If you're exporting your Camtasia project into a package or a format other than a video file, you'll want to host it externally and embed it into your lesson using an embed block type. If you don't already have a web server where you can host web output, you can check out these options:

  • Amazon S3 offers free hosting with generous usage limits. If you go over your limit, you'll be charged a small fee. See this video tutorial by Tom Kuhlmann to learn more about Amazon S3.
  • Google Cloud also has a free hosting service. You'll be charged a small fee if you go over the free limit. See this video tutorial by Tom Kuhlmann to learn more about Google Cloud.
