Exported Rise Project Slow on Our Intranet

Mar 27, 2017

Hello,

A project that I've created with 12-13 lessons and one quiz is very slow for our users. It's currently on our intranet and around 725MB... are we doing something wrong? It does consist of many videos... maybe 20 or so? But each is no longer than 1 minute.

Any ideas what might be going on? We've purchased 4 seats and I've given a large Articulate training for our staff, and now I actually don't have any answers for them in regards to this.

Thanks,

Sadig

Hi Sadig,

It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, but I'd like to get a bit more information from you so we can figure out what's happening!

Have you also tested the Rise "SHARE" link, if so, how does that one behave? If the Share link is loading normally that would be some good information to use when reaching out to your intranet admin or when searching for another hosting solution.

With all that in mind, it's also a fairly large course, one of the largest I've seen! A lot of LMS's or servers may have trouble loading a course that size, have you thought about breaking that up into smaller chunks? You mentioned the videos are fairly short, but if the course as a whole is quite long that could be counterintuitive to the learning process. Determining how long a e-learning course should be isn't an exact science, but there are a few variables to consider when it comes to determining how long an e-learning course should be.

Let us know if you need anything else!

Hi Ashley,

I recall in a previous forum post where I attempted to export this same project and was having issues. I actually had to contact your customer care department and send them the share link so they can export this project to web-only. Which they did since that was the only way.

In regards to the course being too long... is there a limit to how long a course should be? Honestly, if you look at the course, it's only 17 lessons and each lesson is not that complex. I would honestly expect that Rise could handle it. When I went to DevLearn and spoke to the representatives at the Articulate booth, they showed me all that Rise can do but didn't mention any lesson and/or video limitation. This is why I came back to my supervisors, promoted your product to them, got our department to purchase the 4 seats, and gave a full-day training on Articulate applications. I don't understand as there are many online courses out there on the web with more than 30 lessons with no display issues.

It's a government project, so if there is maybe an email that I can send this to you through, that would be great... I just don't want to paste the link in a public forum.

Thanks for your reply,

Sadig

We really appreciate your investment in Rise, Sadig.  Thank you!

Rise will take all the content you can throw at it and keep on going.  Some customers do create large courses, and admittedly, some Intranets, Web Hosts, or Learning Management Systems could have trouble with very large content.  Rise won't limit you, though!

Of course, technical limitations and best practices can be very different.  Did you check out Tom's How Long Should My E-Learning Course Be? article?  I'm a big fan of the closing sentence.  😉

...and if you can't shorten a course, one way to limit the size of a video-heavy course is to embed (rather than insert) your video content.  By embedding more than 48 minutes of video, this course built by Trina still manages to have a tiny footprint!

If you'd like to share your Rise course with us privately, you can do that here, and we'd be happy to take a closer look.  Thanks!

Thanks Justin, we're currently in the process of purchasing a Vimeo Business subscription and will have each video embedded vs. attached (if that's the right description?) to the project. You're right... if each video is linked to Vimeo, then the whole project shouldn't be that large at all. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll update you once the purchase is complete and we test it out.

@Brett, we've got multiple training courses in our building that (unfortunately) are extensive and others, complex. I wish I could stick to shorter videos (such as 18-minute TED Talks) for all of our projects, but at least in this case, it started as a 1-hour video (shot with green screen effects, several actors, scheduling, and various equipment... as well as screencasts, form explainations and overviews)... and covers a very complex topic... but ultimately, I knew that I couldn't roll out a 1-hour video, so in the back of my mind, Rise came to the rescue. I broke up that 1-hour video into around 30 very short videos in a course format, so you can stop and come back to it later if you wish. It worked out perfectly because no one would want to watch a 1-hour video on a topic such as this one.

Again, thanks Ashley and Justin for your help... your customer service is amazing as always. I'll keep you updated on our progress in regards to this issue.
